Total duct excision surgery

Hi gals!

I’m two days out of surgery having had a total duct excision from one of my breasts.

I’ve seen a few threads on this but I have a question that doesn’t appear to have come up yet.

So here goes.

How should my nipple look? Strange question but like what should the colour be two days into recovery? I don’t have any sensation to it which I would expect at this point but I just want to make sure I’m on the right track in terms of blood flow to it. When I came out of surgery it was brown in colour. It has started to go pink in most of it but there is still a section that is brownish. Is this normal?

Btw I’m 27 and never had children, had the surgery due to recurrent infections and development of a fistula so this surgery was my only option to completely fix the issue. Not ideal as I want to have children and I wanted to breast feed which obviously will be difficult with saving only one functional breast

Any advice or stories of others recovery would be greatly appreciated as I don’t know anyone who has been through anything similar!

TIA

  • Hello Anna

I hope that your recovery is continuing to go well and that you're not too sore.

I'm sorry that I'm not really able to give you a certain answer to your question. It certainly sounds good that you've noticed that things are generally returning to a "normal" colour. It is possible sometimes to have some bruising so this may have an impact on what you're seeing.

I'm not sure if you have a follow up appointment booked but if you've any concerns then do get in touch with the clinic or your GP as soon as you're able.

    Best wishes,
