Core Needle Biopsy. Breast. Worried.

Hi ladies and gents. I was wondering if anyone could give me any advise. How long does it usually take to get core needle biopsy results back? My radiologist said up to 2 weeks... but can I ask, if it's bad, will I hear before that? I found a lump (smaller than a pea) around 3 weeks ago. I've been to the breast clinic today, saw the  rest surgeon who wasn't concerned and then went for an untrasound. At first she said it looks benign, but as she looked more, she asked if I've had any trauma to the breast. So I just said no... but I have a 3 year old and  puppy, they are quite large breasts so they get knocked about a bit... but no injury. So she said it could be inflammation or trauma, she wasn't worried but wanted to send a biopsy off. She took 3 biopsy and said she will request the results by letter. If its cancer will I still get a letter? Sorry for the questions, I'm just not sure what to think. Xx

  • Hi

yes two weeks is standard wait, good or bad news you usually called in regardless, but I guess each surgery could be different.  They definitely know what they looking at or feeling and I would be happy they did biopsies to be sure.  Keep yourself busy and not on Dr Google.

Best wishes I hope you receive good news soon.

  • Thanks for getting back to me ♡ I wondered about the results as she told me today (and she's wrote on my paperwork) to send the results via letter. She said if she was concerned she would book an appointment for me to come back... so I'm not sure if she could tell for certain what she was looking at to be able to say that. I'm a rubbish waiter as well. Fingers crossed I hear sometime soon. I dont suppose you no, if it's a very small lump and it turns out to be cancer, does the fact that it's small work in my favour? Or does that not matter? She struggled to get the needle to it as it's so small. Xx

  • Hi I had core needle biopsy and was given results 7 days later at a further clinic appointment I tried to get the results from my GP as I was frantic with worrying but he wouldn't disclose I had to wait I don't think they'd send you a letter as post can get lost or go to the wrong adress but I think it might depend on what area of the country you live as different teaching hospitals might work differently mine unfortunately was cancer and currently starting my journey I'm waiting for Oncotype results which will take 2 week more waiting that is the is the worst . I hope all goes well for you and keep positive

    best wishes marie x

  • Hi

I would say the type of cancer makes the difference first, yes there are different types, plus even if it is cancer they would then check lymph nodes, again that makes a difference.  In my mind I would say small is positive as it's been caught early and I'm sure some of that theory is true.  As the nurse mentioned to me breast cancer is quite complex in its diagnosis.  Bless you I know you must be worried it's not easy to not worry.  I do hope you hear soon, please keep us updated. Xx

lets stay positive as we don't know what it is yet ️

Mine was smal easy removed without affecting shap of my breast and lymph nodes clear, as mine is. Estrogen positive and HER negative apparently it's very good for treating... what do I know this my first breast scare xx

  • Oh Marie. I'm sorry to hear that. Have they told you much more about it as of yet? I hope you're as well as can be expected ♡

Did your core biopsy take away all of your lump? I can't really feel my lump now. My GP said it felt like it was about 5mm and the radiologist said it was tiny. She kept losing it. On the letter that I've come away with it says 'results appointment' and it just says 'by post' next to it. I'm in Manchester. I'm just hoping that means she's quite certain it's nothing and feels comfortable enough to send a letter... but who knows!

I hope everything goes ok for you & I hope it's a smooth process. Much love ♡

  • It is definitely worrying. I mean she did say a few times that she wasn't concerned and that it looks benign... but then went on to do further tests. She took 3 biopsy all together. She also scanned my lymph nodes under my arm and said they look perfectly fine.

Awwh that's good. I'm glad they've been able to remove it without much disturbance. How are you feeling now? Did you need and radiotherapy or anything after it? Xx

  • Hi I had a lumpectomy to remove the 17mm tumour that was nearly 4 weeks ago recovery was good just awaiting next course of treatment I'm sure you'll be fine there's all sorts of different breast issues like non cancerous cysts etc so I hope your news is good keep us updated it's good to know other peoples experience.

    lots of hugs marie x

  • From what you telling me I would if it was me feel quietly confident, although results are the only sure way.  Sounds like she's just being extra cautious and there's nothing wrong with that xx I'm feeling great I had my surgery three weeks ago and been at work a week and a half already.  Wearing a bra a bit irritating but I put cotton wool for soft cushioning.  I had wire guided lumpectomy and she went in via my nipple so no scarring except a small inch and half scar done the side of my armpit to remove 3 lymph nodes to test, which were clear and those were my real worry.  My oncologist appointment is 12th November and they recommend mop up radiotherapy just to make sure no cancer cells have been left behind, then as it was estrogeon based I will probably go on tamoxifen or some form of HRT ... really funny as I had a hysterectomy so long ago so not sure how much estrogeon my body is producing

Just want this part done now so I can forget it lol xx

by the way my lump which I've never felt as it was deep in the breast tissue was around 1.2mm, also the biopsy's don't remove the lump it just takes snips and not all are from the lump it's the outside margin too, so they get a better idea as to how much margin is needed to cut out so you have what's called a clear margin xx

  • Good luck Marie sounds like we almost in the same page.  Good to hear you doing well xx

  • Hi Jbee yep looks like we are I had lumpectomy and 3 nodes removed one had a micromet other 2 was clear now they've sent off tissue for Oncotype  test to America waiting 2 weeks for results to determine if I will benefit chemotherapy it comes back with a score I've seen oncologist today and I'd be looking at a score of 25 and under based on my age 58 invasive ductal carsanoma stage 2 ER positive Her2 negative and cancer type to be of low risk of reoccurrence and would not need chemo just radiation and letrizole tablets anything higher I'd definitely need chemo before radiation so it's the waiting time again but it'll soon pass as I'm keeping busy preparing for Christmas as whatever treatment I'm getting will start 1st week in December so if radiation only I'll need to go every day for 3 weeks so a bit of bad timing so near Christmas as I've got family from overseas coming to stay at my house over Christmas I'll be looking forward to a new year for sure hope all is well with yourself.

    lots of huggs marie x
