Subgenal melanoma

Hi

So I had a biopsy done on my nail matrix on my ring finger 4 weeks ago, after a think black line appeared.

I suffer with anxiety and depression and depression and the 4 week wait has been a nightmare for me as the consultant did mention possible melanoma.

He did say it is very rare and more common in darker skinned people (I am caucasian)

Anyway the Consultant's secretary rang me today to say the results are back but they want to send them for a 2nd opinion. I immediately think this is because it is bad news. She said not necessarily but sometimes they just want to someone else to check it and make take another few weeks! What does this mean? I'm so scared. Has anyone else ever had this experience ?

  • It's easy to think the worst when waiting for results Lixlix, but try not to jump to any conclusions if you can until they've been finalised and come back.

H‍opefully some of our members who have experience of the melanoma process will pop by when they can to offer some reassuring words and advice.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi,

Melanoma, especially subungal melanoma, can sometimes be difficult to detect from a biopsy. In these cases a hospital's histology department will always ask for another hospital's histology department to recheck and give their opinion. They usually send them to one that has greater experience in that particular field (not all hospitals are experts in melanoma). They will want to be sure that they are correct in their finding - it's definately cancer or definately not cancer. It has happened a few times to people I know so it's not unusual. I hope it doesn't take too much longer for you & that the results come back clear. Good luck & please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)
