Cervical cancer

My gynaecologist has told me that he thinks I have squamous cell carcinoma . Would I be told that unless he was pretty certain? I've had an mri scan get results on Wednesday and waiting for colposcopy which my appointment is on the 14th but letter doesn't actually say if I'm having the procedure on that day... I'm so confused . Any advice would be much appreciated

  • Hi Damo

I’m surprised your gynaecologist has said this without further testing. In my experience, cancer wasn’t mentioned until the results of my biopsies were back and it was certain. I’m assuming he has seen something on examination? I would expect that at your colposcopy appointment a biopsy will be taken and sent for analysis and only then can there be be confirmation. There are different types of cervical cancer, with squamous cell being the more common. I have adenocarcinoma, so a less common type.

Usually the mri results, along with biopsies and a ct scan are required to determine the size and stage of cancer and then a treatment plan is formulated once the results are considered at a multidisciplinary team meeting.

It’s obviously very difficult not to worry during this time of uncertainty when you don’t know what you’re dealing with, but try not to let your mind run wild until you know exactly what this is. Treatment for cervical cancer can be very effective, if this is what you have, and please stay off google, as it is not reliable and is far too scary. I wish you the best possible outcome, and please keep us posted if you can. If I can help with anything, I’m happy to do so. xx

  • Thanks for your reply Minska. My gynaecologist told me they was pretty sure. Had MRI and should get results tomorrow. Colposcopy is booked for Friday and then I have a consultation booked for Thursday 14th and hopefully I will know what I'm dealing with on that date.

Im obviously more anxious now you have said he shouldn't of said cancer unless he was certain

  • I had a hysteroscopy and ablation 12 weeks ago, he took a smear at the same time, I'm furious that it's taken 12 weeks for my results to be back from that operation especially when from that I'm being told I could have cancer.... Please help me

  • I was just surprised he said cancer to you before a biopsy as my experience was different. I had a very obvious, nearly 4cm, tumour on my cervix which was clearly visible on examination and he must have known it was cancer but he still just said he had found a “lesion”. I was due to go on holiday the following week and he told me I couldn’t go and would have to cancel as he wanted me back to discuss the biopsy results in a week’s time.

I had a hysteroscopy the day the day I had my punch biopsies. I’m surprised you have had to wait so long for results.

Things are moving quickly now for you with your scan results coming up and your colposcopy. It’s not cancer till they say it is! Are you being told your mri results tomorrow? xx

  • Sorry for not replying sooner. My original MRI and colposcopy results wasn't given to me. I had an MRI with contrast dye on Wednesday and I'm being admitted for another biopsy on Monday, had pre op today
