Fixed, hard (ish) lump on back of neck

Hi

I have had a small hard fixed lump on the back of my neck for a couple of months. It's in the hairline and I'm convinced it's a occipital lymph node. It's not big ... just 'there'. In fact I think its slightly bigger when I wake up and then seems to go smaller during the daytime (odd I know).

I first noticed it when I found a large lump in May, but given it's reduced in size I just didn't think much of it. That is until I started fiddling again and noticed it hadn't gone away completely.

I also get lots of aches and pains and my neck does ache - but I put that down to excessive stress (work and the fact I am now continually prodding and poking this lump and trying to find more - I've become manically obsessed).

I have had extensive blood tests and everthing has come back normal. But because of the length of time I've had it, my doctor has referred me for al US which is next week.

I'm petrified and have significant health anxiety ever since I lost my mum to lung cancer 10 years ago. I've spent hours on google and have convinced myself I have some sort of cancer. I'm driving my very well balanced husband insane.

Has anyone experienced anything similar?

thanks in advance

Leanne xx

  • I'm sorry about the worries this lump is causing you Leanne. It must be very difficult to keep these worries at bay, especially when you have health anxiety.

Hopefully those who have had similar will pop by soon to offer their support and share their experiences with you but in the meantime I just wanted to wish you well with your ultrasound next week.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi

did it it go down? And how was your appointment I’ve had the same for about a year too!

    Thanks

  • Hi

the lump is a lot smaller but if I feel deep, I can still feel it. I had an ultrasound which showed it was a lymph node but it is a benign lymph node so I've stopped worrying about that.

the US did show some thyroid and parathyroid nodules  however (largest being 1cm) so I have a non urgent referral to ENT. Docs aren't concerned as it's all very likely to benign but would rather get seen by ENT nonetheless.

    hope that helps
