Timeline for investigations

Hi had an incidental find whilst taking part in national medical research.  The radiologist reported on One of the scans I had that there was a large left lower pole renal mass which likely represented primary renal cell carcinoma.  He reported this to GP last Tuesday and I have a consultant appt next Wednesday under the two week rule.

Can someone tell me what the time line for investigations and treatment is after that.  Are there nationally set agreed timescales or is every region/speciality different.  This type of information I feel is crucial to the patient and their emotional wellbeing.  I feel like I am in a state of semi-paralysis, and at the mercy of the system but the other part of me is thinking god is this my last Xmas etc etc.

thanks

  • Hello Matrons0001

Welcome to the forum and I'm sorry to hear about your recent news.

It's natural to want to know how things will proceed from your appointment onwards and at what pace. Waiting for tests, results and appointments can be a really difficult time and you description of feeling as if you're in a state of semi-paralysis is one that I'm sure that many of our members here will be able to identify with.

It's not possible for us to say how quickly any necessary tests will be scheduled nor how long it will take for results to come back to you. There are many different factors that can impact on waiting times however I'm sure that your Consultant will want to make sure that appointments happen in a timely fashion so that any necessary treatment can be started as soon as possible.

It may be that you're given details of a clinical nurse specialist next week to give you additional support and advice through this period but if not, or if you would prefer to, then we have a team of nurses here at Cacner Research UK that you can call. They're available Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm on 0808 800 4040.

I hope that your appointment next week gives you some answers and reassurance. Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes,
