just had a biopsy of a mole, waiting for results

had a mole removed on monday 28th oct and waiting on results to get in. slightly nervous as my mum had a melonomatic mole at a similar age to me but hoping it’s all okay.

  • Hi lucyjsxx,

I'm sorry to hear you are waiting for your results and that your mum has had this in the past. Melanoma is, in the main, caused by UV exposure (the sun or sunbeds) but for a small number of patients it's caused by family genes. For these patients, the more close members of the family that have melanoma the higher the risk that it can be hereditary. That said, you don't know if your mum's was caused by UV or if you have had past close family members with the disease. Also, only having one close family member with melanoma does not confirm that you have the gene in your family - it usually takes 2 or more close relatives for it to be possibly genetic. So please don't worry that your mum's history is necessarily going to mean yours will be melanoma.

I'm assuming that your mum's melanoma was some time ago & that she is OK now? In which case it was caught early & she's had no further problem. Hopefully your results will come back benign but if it is melanoma you have probably caught it early & will be fine. I hope that you aren't waiting too long for the results and that they bring you good news. Please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (Stage 3 melanoma patient)
