No support or follow up after fine needle aspiration

Hi,

I had an US and fine needle aspiration on Weds for a large, painful lump in my left breast with nipple inversion, skin purpling. No discharge. I am well, no outwards sign so of infection just very fatigued.

Is there any reason why my FNA was incredibly painful? I have a really high pain threshold but it was so uncomfortable that I shed a tear!

The US consultant left the room promptly with my sample and I received no aftercare advice (dressing removal, meds running out...) or follow up info (appointments, further aspirations needed...) I was just sent home by the nurse. All pretty traumatic. I have had two lots of different antibiotics over 2 weeks but there is no change. The aspiration has also had no effect on the size of the lump or the pain I’m experiencing. My GP surgery says they can’t do anything as the uni hasn’t reached them yet!

I also thought the FNA would give me an immediate sense of relief? This is definitely not the case.

Any info or thoughts on this would be greatly received at this point as I feel like I’ve been sent on my merry way with zero answers or support. Thanks x

  • Hello Mumofgirls82,

It does sound like you had a traumatic experience and that you didn't get the follow up or support you were expecting after this fine needle aspiration. I hope you don't mind but I have added the words 'fine needle aspiration' to your title. This will make it more specific and hopefully attract more responses from other ladies who have been in a similar situation before. I hope that they will come and share their experience with you.

We have some useful information on our website on the FNA on the breast which you can find here. I hope you get some answers very soon - do give your GP a call if you are worried or have any questions and do mention that the two lots of antibiotics haven't improved things.

If you wanted to talk things through with one of our nurses or ask them specific questions about the FNA, you can ring them on this free number 0808 800 4040 - their line is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.

    Best wishes,
