Open surgery for Hysterectomy under GA

I have just had my lymph nodes removed to be checked for cancer spread prior to booked in radical hysterectomy on Monday. This surgery was done keyhole under GA but I also had an epidural. Is this normal? I have been told I will have GA and an epidural for my open surgery hysterectomy. Has anyone one else had similar experience?
