Waiting for a histology

Hi, I found a growth on 12th September.  Went to my doctor, who referred me for a 2-week appointment with a consultant, who saw me about 2 weeks later.  He referred me to have the growth removed within 4 weeks, which was completed on 1st October.

I was told that a hostology would take 10-14 days and so I should hear about 2-3 weeks later.

For the last week and a half I have been ringing daily for an update, only to be told to wait for a letter in the post.

Today, I finally spoke with the consultant's secretary who says the results have been received and checked, but they have been referred for a second opinion.

Obviously it's not the worst news, but it's really upset me.  I just wanted to come here and have a bit of a vent with people who might know the worry I am going through.

So I am wondering what this means, like I know that means someone else is going to have a look, but does anyone have any examples of what to expect, what they'd want to look into further, etc.

Thanks, Mx

P.S. The growth was 2cm long on the outside, it was the same size inside and it was growing on my "mini hoo hah".

  • Hi MariaGunnars,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. I'm sorry to read about what you're going through at the moment - I can understand this is causing you worry and uncertainty.

It's best not to assume anything about what this might mean - it is quite common for results to be checked for a second opinion. There's no real way to tell what to expect, only to wait to find out more which I know is difficult.

You've come to the right place here though in that it is a very understanding community of people. Do use the forum as a safe space to talk through any worries or concerns you have, whatever may happen with the results.

I hope it's not too much longer to wait to find out more.

    WIshing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Thank you Ben.  It's just such a long wait and I'm very good at catastrophising  :(  I hope to publish good news on Monday. Mx
