Ultrasound shows cervical mass - anyone had the same thing?

Hi

I'm looking to see if anyone has had a similar experience as me and if so what the outcome was, as I seem to be stuck in an endless diagnosis loop!

This is a bit of a long story, so I apologise in advance.

After a couple of months of pain in my ovaries, I went to the doctor to see if I had PCOS. After blood tests came back clear, my doctor did an internal exam and said my cervix looked like it was being squashed. She sent me for an urgent smear test, ultrasound and colposcopy.

My smear eventually came back with low grade cell changes, but my ultrasound detected a mass and the technician said it should be visible during colposcopy as it was 'peeking through' my cervix.

During colposcopy, the technician said she couldn't see anything suspicious and took a biopsy of one area.

I'm still awaiting the letter with the results of the biopsy but when I called up the hospital to see if there was an update, they said they had the results and it wasn't cancer. However, earlier in the day there had been some confusion regarding my records.

My doctor has sent me back to the clinic urgently again to try to get to the bottom of the mass.

I guess my question is can a standard cervical biopsy detect cancer if the mass is sat on the cervix (which my doctor seems to suggest mine is) and has anyone had a similar experience? I've been passed from pillar to post a bit on the NHS (which I've not gone into here) and I'm trying to work out whether I should go private to get this expedited, as the pain is getting more severe and I'm losing weight.

Thanks for any info people can give :)

  • I have had something similar I have also been passed from pillar to post although has been great.A large ovarian mass was detected on ct scan an urgent referral to gynaecologist was sent was referred back to go for ultrasound and CA125 blood test .Test have come back and another urgent referral to gynaecologist was made but today I found out it has been downgraded I’m sick with worry and a wait if 12/18 weeks seems a long time to be seen by gyny especially since my go made urgent referral.

  • Sorry to hear you're going through this too.

Gyny tried to cancel my second appointment because they got confused and it was only because I called and put them straight that they corrected the error. Assume you've spoke to someone there and explained the issue from start to finish?

You're right, 12/18 weeks sounds ridiculous. I've got an appointment next tuesday but it's back with colposcopy, which I think is the wrong department. I'm going to see what they say and if not, I might try to go private.
