Few questions about groin lumps

Hello,

Sorry, these questions are probably silly but I just wondered if someone could shed a bit of light on what a swollen lymph node should feel like in my groin. Also sorry if this is in the wrong place!

I have a larger and a smaller painless lumps in my groin on my left side. I think they are slightly swollen lymph nodes (under the skin and fat layer in my groin - I can pull the skin away from them. Nothing is visible on the surface). I think they are hard lumps, although I’m not sure what a soft lump feels like - does this mean they squish easily?

Also, I am not sure if they are moveable. I think that they are fixed and the skin / fat layer moves over the top of them rather than them moving around.

In general I have felt sort of under the weather and tired for a while (I have had similar feelings before with a vitamin deficiency). I feel sort of breathless and have pain in specific points in my left chest but it’s not bad at all and they are not there all the time and change. I’ve also had “funny” feelings in my legs (hard to describe, it’s a sort of weird uncomfortable feeling when I’m in bed) and some pain in my legs and leg joints. Finally I’ve had stiff top of shoulders very on and off.

I will see a doctor as I don’t feel right but can anyone shed any light on whether these could all be related to something specific as well as advice regarding the lumps?

Many thanks indeed!

  • Hello,

Not to worry about asking silly questions. I have always got plenty of those...!

First of all it's difficult to guess whether the aches and so on you have been having could be related to your lumps. They are quite non-specific so could be entirely unrelated; but it is good to keep a log of these things if you are having a lt of random symptoms, so you can look back over it and see if there is a pattern or something obvious that might explain them.

Second, the lumps could be lymph nodes, or could be any number of other structural things within that area. Sometimes it's a tendon or a vein, sometimes a fatty lump, sometimes a node. I have a suspicious mass in that area at the moment which I've had for many years, and both my doctor and I thought it was a lymph node but the ultrasound said otherwise.

Lymph nodes will often either go down again after a few days or weeks or months, because they are inflammatory/reacting to some kind of infection (could just be from shaving your legs), or they will continue to grow, in which case they might need evaluation at some point.

So without being qualified in any way at all, I would advise you to keep an eye on them, and if they are still there or getting bigger in a few weeks' time, perhaps go and see your GP and ask if they think they are anything to worry about. I'd imagine they will either suggest a reason for them to be there, or tell you to monitor them for longer. It's unlikely you will be referred for anything that's less than a couple of centimetres in the inguinal (groin) region, because enlarged nodes there are very common.

I hope this helps a bit.
