Urgent referral

I have an appointment at the breast screening clinic on Thursday. I found  a lump in my left breast and immediately went to my GP. She said that it's a "good 2cms." I have a little bit of occasional pain or discomfort including when I take a deep breath in. I'm coping at the minute but the fear of what might lie ahead does set in at times. My appointment letter arrived today which I was pleased about because I wasn't working and was able to hide it from my children.

  • Please can I ask how long it took for your letter to come through after you saw the GP? I saw my GP yesterday (Saturday) after finding a hard lump in my left breast also, which sounds around the same size as yours, and I've also been urgently referred.

i just can't think of anything else other than this appointment.

  • Hi I work in a hospital and all breast is seen within 2 weeks at our hospital it's government guidelines so I should imagine it's the same everywhere, you should not be waiting any longer than 2 weeks from the date of your referral. Hope this helps xxx

  • Thank you, I had known about the two week referral... at the moment two weeks feels like an eternity so I hope it's sooner but I will just try and be patient. Thank you for responding to me xx

  • Hi, I saw my GP on the Wednesday and the letter arrived yesterday (Saturday) and my appointment is on Thursday. I hope.you get an appointment very soon. Xx

  • Thank you, that's reassuring. Lots of luck to you for your appointment Thursday xx

  • I replied to you earlier but I mustn't have hit the "post now" button properly. When I receivedy appointment letter it was accompanied by a leaflet which reassuringly outlined everything to expect on the day of the appointment. It was very well explained and the opening paragraph stated that 90% of women who attend the clinic have non cancerous growth. When I find myself starting to worry about my current situation I immediately remind myself of this statistic. I also keep telling myself that today I have a lump and nothing more. I haven't been told I have cancer. I k ow everyone has their own coping mechanisms but for now this is working for me. I know you are very worried and just want your appointment date and I thought I should tell you that after I saw my GP on Wednesday, I then phoned the clinic on Friday to ask if they received the referral and they were very good. They not only checked for me but they also gave me details of my appointment and said that would be posting out my letter that day. I just thought that I should tell you this as maybe you might want to phone your clinic to put your mind a bit at ease. Take care. Xx

  • Oh thank you, I will call them first thing tomorrow. As I saw my GP on a Saturday I wasn't sure if it might take longer, but it can't hurt to call. 90% is good odds, I'll take that! And you are so right... for now, it is just a lump and nothing more. It's just the not knowing and the waiting... but answers will soon come I'm sure xx

  • Just wanted to say Hi and send you a big hug as I know exactly how you feel as that was me in Feb this year.

i had a scheduled mammogram due anyway but beforehand I'd found a hard immovable lump, .

A huge percentage of breast however are not cancer though but if it is the care you receive is amazing .

i won't say don't worry because that's impossible but try not to let imagination run away with you.
Your welcome to send me message if want to x

  • Thank you. I have to say that I have found this forum a great help. Just knowing that you aren't living this alone and that there are others who understand exactly how you are feeling. I am realistic and I know that come Thursday my life could change greatly but I just feel that I will deal with that if I have to but I'm not going to try to do it a minute sooner than needed. I am going to do my best to remain optimistic but I will be glad when it's Thursday as the waiting really is very difficult.  Xx

  • Please can anyone on here clarify. Does the urgent referall always mean you would be seen within two weeks. I saw my GP on Tuesday and am awaiting an urgent referall to a gastroenterologist.
