Ovarian cyst type unknown? CA-125 blood test.

Hi all,

This is my first time posting on this site so please bare with me.. I am going to share my previous story of cysts so that it can hopefully help someone some day & then also share my current situation.

I have a history of ovarian cysts, rewinding a few years back, probably starting in 2012 (I would have been 16) my periods completely stopped. Now, this didn't exactly phase me because I was under the impression that my coil prevented this anyway. From 2012 - 2015 I experienced symptoms including nausea, dizziness, bloating, changes in my bowel habits (passing a bowel movement 2 times per week, with struggle), pressure & extreme abdominal & back pain that would stop me in my tracks & have me doubled over. In this time frame I visited the GP countless times, each time being told I must have IBS or I was just unfit & need to become more active. So around March 2015 (now 19 years old), I was laying in my bed & having one of my usual abdominal pains. I actually felt a large ball-like shape inside my lower abdomen, this was on the right side, however, I then found one exactly the same on the left side, so made an appointment to see the GP.
After my examination the GP sent me to the hospital for an ultrasound. Unfortunately the radiographer was unable to see anything as my bowels were completely full & blocking the view. I was then referred for an MRI. After my MRI I seen a consultant who told me I had bilateral dermoid cysts, one of which 11cm & the other 10cm. I was then referred for surgery as the consultant was extremely concerned they may rupture. So I signed off permission to have a hysterectomy if this was completely necessary.
Fast forward a few weeks & surgery was successful & I thankfully, was able to keep all of my reproductive organs. I spent 3 days in hospital afterwards, nurses checking up on me every few hours. The day after surgery I was out of bed & trying to walk. Once home I had 6 weeks off work to fully recover & then had a phased return to work with light duties.

I was very lucky to then recieve a letter telling me these cysts were benign.

So here we are in 2019.
I have been suffereing with extreme back pain for the last year & a half & have also experienced intense vertigo & nausea. My periods stopped in, what I believe is February this year, & I have had abdominal pain & pressure. I decided it was time to see the GP in June.
After hearing of my history the GP sent me for an ultrasound. This resulted in a 5-6cm cyst inside my right ovary, however she could not find my left. The hospital then referred me for a repeat scan around 6 weeks later. This was done on Thursday (24th Oct). I have been told that my cyst is growing, however only at a low rate. I was also told that they can not identify the cyst type or find my left ovary, again.

It's worth mentioning I had a check up scan in 2017 & I was completely clear, so this has grown within the last 1-2 years.

The GP surgery called me yesterday (25th Oct) & asked for me to have a blood test carried out. This is the blood test CA-125. Now, I can't help but panic..

I have a small lump in the area between my 2 collar bones & have also been feeling pain & pressure in the upper right area of my abdomen. I am worried that I may have cancer, I know that can not be determined until I have further tests, but I feel I need to get this off my chest. I just have a bad feeling.

If anyone has any stories similar to mine can you please tell me about your experience & outcomes?

Sorry for the long post, I like detail.

  • I was diagnosed with a cyst on my ovary only detected because i had a miscarriage the hospital didn't seem too concerned about it however i was so went to my own gp and explained the hospitals findings and also previous to miscarriage i had spotting between periods the doctor orderd a c125 blood test which came back normal ,went for a smear after ,something i should have done but never have done ,the nurse doing it saw blood so ask the gp to take a look she did and ordered an urgent 2 week referral to gynogolgist so i have a caloscopy booked for 1st november I'm terrified the c125 results however did offer some comfort it's not what anybody wants doing but you have to do what the doctors say to sort whatever is going on xx

  • Hi Tullulah,

I am very sorry to hear of your miscarrige, I can't even begin to imagine how you must be feeling.

I am glad to hear that your CA125 results came back normal, did you have a long wait for the results?

I hope all goes well with your procedure on the 1st of Nov!

I am very nervous about my test results, however I know it's one step closer to better health so it must be done xx
