Mum’s Ovarian Mass

Hello,

My mum is currently undergoing some tests for an ovarian mass that is 14 cm long. She went to the doctors in August as she felt something in her lower stomach that wasn't quite right. The doctor felt it and said that he will refer her for a internal and external scan, because my mum has serious health anxiety he requested it as urgent. She went for the scans and they said she has a mass on her right ovary that is 14cm long, the sonographer said she is 99.9 percent sure it is a systt. My mum was then referred to gynaecology, and the gynaecologist said that he is 99.9 percent sure it is a cyst too but wants to do an MRI to make sure. Mum had a ovarian cancer blood test but we haven't had the results back yet.  At that moment we were all quite hopeful, mum had the MRI at the beginning of October and she got a letter through the other day saying that they recommend she has an urgent CT scan of the chest abdomen and pelvis. Me my mum, dad and sister are so scared as we are thinking it's the worst. I have been off work sick worrying about it so much. Has anyone else been through the same thing?

Thank you

  • Hi Lauren.S,

I can imagine this must be a very confusing time for you and your mum to be told by both the sonographer and the gynaecologist that this ovarian mass is most likely to be a cyst and then suddenly to receive this letter recommending an urgent CT scan of the chest abdomen and pelvis. I know it is really hard but try not to draw any conclusions until you find out more. There can be all sorts of reasons why this additional scan has been requested. This is a really difficult time having to go through a battery of tests and waiting to get these all important results. The best thing to do and I know it is really hard is for you and your family to try and keep busy and focused on other things and to avoid looking anything up online as this will only make your anxiety worse. I am so  sorry you have had to take time off work too due to the worry this is causing you. I hope everyone around you has been supportive. Sadly this is now just a waiting game as many here will tell you and I hope that you will receive the blood test results soon and of all the other tests so that you know a little bit more about what you dealing with.

Keeping everything crossed for you and your mum that it all turns out to be fine and nothing to worry about.

    Best wishes,
