Investigative surgery- Partial thyroidectomy experience

I wanted to post on here my experience so far in the hope that it may help and give reassurance to others in a similar situation. I read through this website coming up to my surgery and it helped me a lot.

I am an active and healthy 32 year old female who enjoys exercise, music, gigs and fashion.

I noticed a lump in my neck 4 months ago. I am a Dentist so I knew the importance of monitoring these. To begin with I thought it was a swollen node but when it had not resolved and had grown in size over a period of the next 4 weeks I booked an appointment with my GP. He referred me for an ultra sound scan. I had the scan a month later which showed a suspicious nodule attached to my right thyroid lobe. I was then referred for an  an ultra sound guided FNA. I had this 1 week later. The experience of the FNA is much better than it sounds. I had local anaesthetic injection into the thyroid area and then another needle in the area to remove some cells for testing. It was not a painful experience only slightly uncomfortable. The wait for the results was much worse.
The results came back as a thy3f, no cancer cells was detected in the sample however the cells present were abnormal. The lesion was 5cm. 1 in 4 thy3f are cancerous and therefore a partial thyroidectomy was advised by my consultant.
This news was hard to digest. I have always had a major fear of having a GA ( although I have been involved in many surgeries over my career) I was terrified about the scar it was going to leave and the recovery process. My every waking area was spent feeling dread and of the verge of tears, I wasn't sleeping and struggling to eat. I couldn't get 1 out 4 our my mind.

I had the surgery 5 days ago and I feel amazing. I had no sickness after the GA, the pain was minimal and controlled easily by paracetamol. The worst bit of it all was the over night stay in hospital, I just couldn't sleep as I am a fussy sleeper any way.

I had my drain taken out the next morning, which was unpleasant but manageable. My wound was held together by staples which is pretty shocking to look at to begin with but I returned to hospital three days later to have the staples removed. The wound is red and swollen still but very neat and I really think over the next few months it will heal and blend well and I am already proud of it, it is part of me and an achievement.
I am waiting for the results of the thyroid tissue which is going to take three weeks but I am calm and keeping myself as busy as my stiff neck will allow me! I am eating lots of protein and vegetables to heal my wound and feed a positive mind.

I hope if someone's reads this and is having a similar procedure it makes them feel less afraid and good luck to you.

  • Just wanted to say thank you for this thread. It was hugely helpful in helping me deal with my own fears about my thyroid lobectomy, which took place two days ago. It went as you and others have described on this thread, and I so agree that the lead up is far worse than the op itself.

After one uncomfortable night in hospital, the drain was out and I could go home that morning. I'm recovering at home and also only needing paracetamol.

Results hopefully within the next couple of weeks, although some helpful assurance from the surgeon that he could see no problems with lymph nodes etc. Voice a little hoarse and neck somewhat stiff, but so far so good.

  • Hi Maire, hope you are recovering well!

I recently got U3 and Thy3f, and the doctor indicated a surgery might be needed. But he was not very sure and said he would take my case to MDT meeting for further advice. I am now a bit lost as there is no one I can contact for further information. I don't know this docotor' name and I have more questions now.

In you case, did you just wait for your doctor to call you, or is it possible for patients to directly contact the doctor we see in our appointment? And I just wonder about your timeline. After endocrinology consultation, how long did it take to see the surgeons to plan the actual surgeries? And how fast was the surgery scheduled? Many thanks!!

  • Hi Marie

I am so happy that you found the post useful. I was so fearful and scared leading up to the op and really wanted to try reduce fears for others. I remember that night in hospital well, but as you said once the drain is out and you are home you can really start to recover.
I hope you have good news with your results and that you heal quick! Make sure you have lots of delicious food and rest!
    All the best!!

  • Hi Bennn

i had the consultants name so they were easier to contact. It might be worth giving the hospital a call and see if one of the secretaries can help you?

I was offered either the surgery or ongoing monitoring with the warning that surgery was likely to be needed at some point. After discussion we agreed to go ahead with the op.

I was lucky to get a speedy appointment as I was covered privately through work, which I know is very fortunate. The hospital should be able to advise you on wait times.

i hope this helps and the very best of luck.

    Marie

  • Hi, Marie, thanks for your advice. I will give the hospital a call tomorrow morning.

Hope you can have good news about the result soon.

  • Thank you, you made a real difference to how fearful I was. I have everything crossed for the results, but I'm optimistic that at worst the other side needs removing and at best I'm sorted for now, save the hormone balancing act.

  • Doctors discovered a huge mass in my neck going down almost to my stomach. This was diagnosed as a huge multinodular goiter. They tried getting thigs to settle with radioactive iodine twice. When things didn't improve I had a partial thyroidectomy and removal of the offending nodules.Imediately after the operation I felt amazing, I could breath easily. No more chocking sensation, and a feeling I was going to suffocate. I had no pain at all.The drain removal was just a strange sensation, removal of the stitches was easy no pain.I never had any ill effects at all. That was 12 years ago.

Now in 2021 I have discovered a marble sized lump in my neck. Doctor thinks this is another thyroid nodule on the remaining thyroid tissue.I also have a swollen Lymph node under my chin.I'm not worried about it.I will just have to wait and see how things go.

So anyone going through these issues have no need to worry about getting things seen to, don't let fear stop you from getting things checked out.

I am in total agreement with Flowerf4iry All the best moving forward to everyone.

  • I was wondering how you were informed of the results? Was it by letter or did you have to go in for an appointment? Thanks :)

  • Hi,
