Has anyone had an enlarged lymph node for six/seven years?

Hi everyone, I'm new here.

I've been trying to find examples online of chronically enlarged nodes which people have had for maybe six years or more. Not much has come up; I suppose often people might get them looked at a bit sooner than that.

I have had one in the top of my thigh for roughly that long. I found it either just before or just after my last child was born, I can't remember - it felt hard-ish and lentil-sized, and I made a note but it didn't do anything, so I just kept monitoring it. After a year or two it was probably the size of a baked bean, and then a couple of years later more like a small kidney bean I suppose. It was mobile, and smooth and seemed to fluctuate a bit - I assumed because of hormones, or whatever was causing it to be enlarged in the first place. So it got a bit bigger, then smaller again.

At that point I went to the GP about it, but she wasn't able to feel it and just said watch and wait. Anyway a month or two ago it started to feel a bit uncomfortable, like it might be pressing on a nerve I suppose, and although it wasn't really noticeably larger it was bothering me; I've been able to see it through the skin for a couple of years, in certain positions, and I don't like it being there. So I went back and she could feel it this time, and said she would send me for an ultrasound. And I had blood tests which have come back more or less fine, so I'm just waiting for an appt and freaking out a bit.

Having searched it up, it seems as though it would fit the profile for Follicular Lymphoma quite well. I can't feel any other lumps anywhere, and I haven't had any B symptoms.

I suppose I'm trying to find a differential diagnosis for it other than FL, but I can't seem to come up with much - everything seems to be either about reactive nodes, which are softer and go away after a while, or malignant ones - it doesn't feel hard like I imagine a metastatic node would, and it isn't fixed. So if it isn't an indolent form of lymphoma then I'm not sure what else it could be.

If anyone else has got, or had, a weird solitary (I hope) node like this, for years and years, I'd be really interested to hear from you - even if it was malignant. Just going a bit mad I suppose.

Thanks for reading if you got this far : )

  • Hey!

Why is the doctor removing them for your daughter, did she have swollen lymph nodes?

  • Hi Gailx,

My daughter had her tonsils & adenoids removed in Feb 2022 after 7 years of fighting with the doctors. It turns out her were over TWICE their normal size & that she would have suffered from breathing difficulties! Yeah; no **** sherlock! Now, since their removal, she can breath, hasn't been ill & hasn't had any time off school.

    RESULT!

  • Hi, I've also had a swollen lymph node on my neck for past five months and doctor did blood tests and said everything was fine. I've now got one under my armpit and also have constant itching which is meant to be another symptom of cancer so I am really worried and have another doctors appointment on friday but i know they'll say it's nothing. Not really sure what to do as want to get it sorted

  • Hi just wondering how you are doing?  4 years ago I had 2 pea size lymph nodes on the back of my neck and head they biopsied 1 it came back reactive left at that

  • Hey Mandyarty,

I just noticed you were hoping to find out how anon.m is getting on.

Unfortunately they haven't been back on the forum since making this post back in February, so you may not hear back from them, but hopefully you will get a reply from some of the other members on this thread who are in a similar situation as well, or if you'd prefer, you can start your own discussion.

In the meantime, if you've noticed any changes with your lymph nodes or are worried about them, it may be worth booking an appointment with your GP as they'll be able to answer any questions you have and hopefully put your mind at ease.

    Kind regards,

  • I am unsure if you'll reply to this, however I am very young - just turning 20. And I have had very swollen lymph nodes in only one side of my neck for about 4 years yet no other symptoms of absolutely anything. They're worrying but when I was younger I had a really bad virus which caused lymph node swelling my elderly doctor said she had "never seen in her life" I don't know if this is because of that but I am worried since I've not had it checked and can't tell if they're enlarging. It's really a worrying size however there is no pain. I'll update here since it seems to be a semi active forum.

  • Heyy,

I noticed a random swelling on the left side of my neck which appeared out of no where

I've had a lump on the side of my neck for 5 months and no other apparent symptoms- I've been to see my go last week who said they will refer me to get an ultrasound however reassured me it's unlikely to be anything serious.
