Worried, waiting for a ct scan

Hi everyone, I'm new here, not really sure how to explain things but I'll do my best

I'm due to have a ct scan next week but I'm going out of my mind at the moment. Over a year ago I noticed a white lump ulcer looking thing in the back of my throat on my tonsil, I tried to feel what it was and my tonsil feels like it has something hard inside of it, so I went to the doctors and they said it was probably a tonsil stone and so I left and just hoped it would go away. A few months after I start to feel poorly and constantly drained and getting a lot of pain in the ear on the same side, I can often taste blood in my throat and at times cough little specks up, and my jaw started to ache and I could feel a lump under my jaw bone which I've been told is a enlarged lymph node recently. I left it until only recently to go to the doctors as they hadn't been much help to begin with. Anyway I went back and the doctor said it wasn't a tonsil stone but maybe scaring from acid from my stomach so did a course of a months tablets to see if the helped, they did nothing, I went back and saw another doctor who said it's nothing to do with stomach acid and referred me to see an ent specialist, he looked at my throat and said he'd send me for a ct scan but hasn't said what it could actually be, but the past week I've been feeling worse than ever, I feel like a balloon is being blown up in my head most of the time and the pain in my ear, throat and jaw is becoming more often. I've also noticed that behind my tonsil is actually turning white with veins running through it and it's starting to hurt when I swollow and drink food. I have looked up the symptoms online and it's said Abu cancer which is worrying me but I don't know if that's even possible as I'm only 29, yes I've smoked for a very long time but I am trying to tell myself it's not possible for it to be anything bad at my age. I don't me that to upset anyone just I thought my age group it was unlikely but I'm now worrying with the what ifs. I just don't know what to think and I just hope I'm worrying over nothing but I'd appreciate some advice please.

  • Hi LillyRose,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. It sounds like you've been through a tough time recently and I can imagine it has been difficult to have had a number of appointments and with different answers.

Firstly it is good that you have a scan booked in - hopefully that will help you to find out some proper answers and give you some next steps to take.

Try to avoid looking things up online as this always gives general information that isn't specific to you, and it can often be out of date or not relevant too.

I hope it's not too much longer to wait for the scan - in the meantime aim to keep yourself distracted and focusing on your normal day-to-day as much as possible. I know this is probably easier said than done, especially with the discomfort you mention with eating.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben

  • Hi there, thank you for your reply.

My scan is on Friday but it feels like it's forever away. I'm really worried about what the result will come back as, silly as it sounds but not because of fearing if it is cancer and how it'll impact me but because of how it'll impact on family life. My partner works full time and I have nobody apart from him who can look after the children so I'm not sure how treatment would be possible as he's at work all week and we can't afford for him to take time off. So I'm worrying about how we'd cope as a family. How reliable are ct scans at picking up throat and tonsil cancer, I have no idea how these things work and how much they can clearly see. Thank you for responding.
