Lump in neck

Hello

Not sure if anyone can give me some advice.

About 6weeks ago I found a slightly enlarged painless lymph node on the right hand side of my neck. I thought it was a little odd as it wasn’t sore, I’ve had bad tonsillitis many times in the past and usually when my nodes swell it’s painful and on both sides. So I thought maybe it was an unusual early sign that I was fighting something or would get a cold. But no other symptoms developed.

The lump was/is not painful, it feels a bit rubbery and is about two fingertips long. It moves when I push on it. I noticed two weeks later my right tonsil was swollen but not painful. I was also feeling unusually tired. I went to the chemist, they suggested I see my gp. when my gp appointment came round it had been 4 weeks since I found the lump. Still had one big tonsil and very tired. I had also noticed that over the last few months I’ve lost about 3kg but I’ve not really changed my diet. Although my appetite is slightly reduced I still eat very well. I also have a very slight weezy chest, sometimes a bit of a cough.

My gp got me to have some blood tests (which made me feel very dizzy and weak for a whole day and a half). I suspected I might have some weird infection with no cold/flu symptoms or something like that. The blood test came back normal apart from low iron. The doc said come back if the lump hasn’t gone in 2 weeks. This week I went back, the gp said I had no infection but a slightly raised temp and has referred me to have a neck scan. She gave me no other information, or insight into what she thinks it might be.

waiting for the next appointment. But I was wondering what this could be, I don’t want to jump to any wild conclusions. What else besides cancer can give these symptoms? Is it possibly a cyst? And what does that feel like? Any advice would be great.

Thanks for taking the time to read.

  • Hi, sorry to hear that you are having problems. Sounds like you are very run down and your doctor is doing everything to eliminate anything sinister. It could be your glands doing the job they are supposed to do, they swell when fighting infection etc and it could be your tonsils still causing the problem.  I have lymphoma and I think that’s what’s worrying you, your bloods were ok so doctor now going to check with possibly an ultrasound which if they see anything suspicious they will do a biopsy but if they don’t, they won’t go any further. My lump didn’t move, and I had loads more symptoms which I didn’t realise at the time, but I’d keep an eye on your weight. Fingers crossed it just a virus and nothing shows up. Best wishes

  • Most lumps turn out to be raised in response to infection but losing weight is not a great sign,  unfortunately. My husband sees a consultant tomorrow for the biopsy results for his neck lump..

The consultant will take a good look at your mouth and throat and may arrange an ultrasound guided aspiration. They use ultrasound to see what the lump looks like, put a needle in and take cells for a biopsy. My husband is needle phobic and says it is easier than giving blood. They'll put gel on your neck and he found some behind an ear hours later. The scanner goes both sides of your neck, it's a hand held thing like they use for your bump when pregnant. They may do a different type of biopsy. His gp arranged a chest X-ray, I think looking for other problems.

We have been waiting weeks for the results as it can take some time to culture cells after the biopsy.. We've been told his biopsy was inconclusive so going to find out what comes next.

Neck lumps are accessible if they need to remove them and the survival rate for some types is very good. Good luck.

  • Thank you so much Scones and Anotheralias for taking the time to respond and letting me know what to expect at the scan. I wonder if I should ask my husband to come with me, but it sounds like a pretty standard procedure so probably no need.

Thank you both for sharing your stories and courage. I wish you both well in your journeys... Scones I hope you’re in recovery and well. And Anotheralias it must be very hard waiting for your husbands diagnosis, best wishes for you both. thank you for making me feel not alone (I’m not speaking to anyone about this in my life until I have answers so as not to alarm, i want to be pragmatic. so it’s very helpful to have your responses). I’ll update when I have had a scan. Thank you.x

  • Thank you so much for your response Scones and sharing your story, I will be patient and hope for the best. I hope that you are doing well and getting all the support you need. Best wishes to you too.

  • Unfortunately it was not great news. While everyone still thinks this could be just an inflamed lymph node the biopsy showed it was heterogenerous, that means it may not be quite as benign as they first thought. The consultant cant now feel any lump, however, only a salivary gland - so suggested a repeat scan and another biopsy if there is anything to biopsy, but a punch biopsy so taking more cells. My husband could also have a day patient procedure where they make a little slit in his neck and if there is a lump they remove the whole lot. Although my husband opted for the scan he is now having second thoughts so will sleep on it and maybe opt for the day case removal. He wants a quicker answer than he would get waiting for biopsy results after another scan but there is a 1% risk of nerve damage, possibly temporay, and a 1% risk of infection. .
