Frustrated at slow process, need to vent - thyroid nodule

Im sorry if this all seems incredibly petty but I’m very frustrated and need to let it all out.

about two months ago, I felt a lump in my thyroid so booked an appointment with my gp, which was scheduled for later that month. . She felt the lump too, and referred me for an ultrasound. Two weeks later, I got it done. I was told later that week that it   was a thyroid nodule, with a U3 result, meaning that it wasn’t benign (but also not suspicious). Given it was U3, I needed a biopsy. Okay, that’s scary, but I was glad to be on the process of getting an answer.

they said it’s be two weeks. I get an appointment for Monday morning (two weeks later) then the Thursday before I get a voicemail saying ‘I’m calling about your cancelled appointment, we’d like to reschedule so call us back’

i called a million times, left voicemails and all, then eventually was called back and told that the doctor called my appointment (no reason given) but he was holding extra hours the next day. This was frustrating, but I was glad the doctor was holding extra hours.

I shuffle work hours around, and leave work early the day of my appointment. I show up on time, and the doctor is 30 mins late. Fine, I just want this biopsy done, and I’m just glad to be getting it done.

NOPE. He tells me he wants to redo the ultrasound, because he’s not the one that did it and he’s the specialist, and this appointment was only a consultation, in which he asked me three questions and sent me off. He literally could have called two weeks before, asked those questions (which my gp and the ultrasound  technician had already asked) and booked me for an ultrasound.

i literally already did an ultrasound. Why can’t he just review that one? Now I have to wait two weeks for a second ultrasound that is going to show the EXACT same thing. Then another two weeks for the biopsy, which by then the thyroid nodule would have grown bigger (as it already has) meaning it’d be more likely I would have an inconclusive result.

i expressed my concerns, and he literally was just like “oh even if it is cancer, it’s a good cancer”. I mean, I get that it’s a slow growing cancer, but still, there’s no good in this. There’s still surgery, radiation, time off work, emotional distress, follow ups - this isn’t a whatever process. I felt belittled.

im just so frustrated with this process, its so inefficient. Am I being crazy?

  • Hello Chaibe,

Welcome to Cancer Chat. It does sound like it has been an incredibly frustrating process for you and being told you had to do a second ultrasound was obviously not something you had expected and that will as you say make you wait a bit longer. It's dealing with this long wait for results that many on here describe as the most frustrating and stressful thing you can go through. Try not to worry too much though if you can - even though things are taking a little longer than you had anticipated, it looks like they are being very thorough in their investigations which is a good thing. You did the right thing to voice your concerns and do share your worries with him or if you feel like you are not getting the answers you need to your questions, perhaps you could also ask to get a second opinion. You can find out more about this here

I hope you find the reassurance you need very soon and that you won't have to wait too long while going through each step involved in the process.

Hopefully you will hear from others here who have been through this before and I hope that they will come and share their experience with you.

    Best wishes,
