Two moles on my groin

I'm waiting to see my gp next week I'm 28 I've had both these moles a while now one I had checked out when I first noticed it as I picked it off and it grew back it was weird as it sort of resembled a skin tag on one side  2017 one started to crack and little bits peeled off but it never bled and it seemed to heal fast forward to few days ago majority of it peeled off its still there. Lighter in colour like a normal mole  the other one has always looked weird but I'm worried all the time I spent ignoring them means I'm gonna be diagnosed with stage 4 melonoma I've also done the silly thing of googling which hasn't helped I've never used sun beds I've never got sun burn there. One looks really scary and I can't work out if it's changed. And the other one clearly has  I'm really worried and have a week to wait for the gp

  • Hi Andy and welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry about the worries your moles are causing but you're doing the right thing by going to get them checked out by your GP.

Our minds do have a tendency to run away from us when we're scared and when we try to reassure ourselves using Dr.Google it usually tends to make things worse so if you can, do try to stay away from it from now on.

There are quite a lot of posts about moles on the forum so our members understand what you're going through at the moment and will hopefully be along soon to offer their support.

Fingers crossed all goes well next week.

    Kind regards,

  • Hi,

It's good that you are getting them checked by your GP. Hopefully they will be fine but if the GP isn't sure, you may be referred to see a dermatologist who is an expert in these matters.

To try and ease your worries a little, can I just say that only 2 or 3 people out of 10 referred to dermatology are diagnosed with skin cancer so the odds are in your favour. Also, if your moles have been looking dodgy for a few years, you would have known before now if they are cancerous and they have spread! Don't google, it just feeds your insecurity - the information is vastly out of date and focuses on the worst case scenarios which are in the minority!

Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)

  • I would love to reassure you but unfortunately I'm in a very similar situation.  I have a mole on the tragus of my ear which has been suspicious for months, but only just got round to having it looked at once a friend mentioned the possibility of skin cancer, and like you, having googled I'm also thinking the worse.  Now have a referral to Dermatology, but spoke with a GP over the phone today as I have also found a lump in my neck (where I think my lymph nodes would be), so I'm being seen again this afternoon.

Can you get in to see the GP sooner to put your mind at ease?  Maybe a same day emergency appointment?  I didn't think mine justified an emergency appointment as I have had it for months, but the more I read up it seems every week counts so I got one the next day (initially with a nurse practitioner then a GP).
