Waiting on cervical biopsy results

Hello,

I'm new to this chat and currently driving myself insane. I'm 34 and a mum of a 7 year old boy. I have always attended my smear tests and a year before having my son I had abnormal cells and a biopsy sent but no further treatment needed. Just more frequent check ups.

All of my smears since came back normal until my recent one in July this year.  I recieved a letter after missed phone calls from colposcopy saying an appointment had been made for me as CIN3 and severe dyskaryosis with moderate changes had been detected.

At my colposcopy appointment my consultant said it was unusual for such a high grade change in a short space of time. He took 2 biopsys and said he wanted to wait on results before performing any treatments. That was on 6th September.

I have been back and forward to my gp from the beginning of this year with constant pelvic, hip, leg ,lower back pain, constant period like cramps and feeling beyond exhausted. However it wasn't until after my biopsys that I learned this can all be symptoms of cervical cancer so I have been worried to say the least.

I rang the clinic today to ask if there was any update on my results. The receptionist said my results are back but the doctor is off this week! And they will send a letter with results. I'm just finding it very frustrating now knowing my results are there and I don't know what they say. Would the lab have sent my results to my GP also or does the consultant have to write his report 1st?

Sorry for such a long post x

  • I'm so glad your treatment was successful.  What a relief you must have felt. Is the scan part of your check ups? Xx

  • Thank you! It’s standard to get a scan 3 months after treatment but no more after that unless there is any concern/symptoms.. My consultant has seen something on my cervix which he thinks may be scar tissue from the radiation so he’s being cautious and getting it checked by another specialist. I feel really well and have no symptoms so I’m hoping all will be ok and is just some scar tissue. xx

  • Glad they are being cautious! Glad to hear you are feeling better. Did you have symptoms before you found out you had cervical cancer? Xx

  • Hi Lilybilly

Yes, I did...but I am post menopausal. Bleeding, deep pelvic pain, watery discharge and backache. All pretty typical for for most of us symptoms wise.  xx

  • I think people should be made more aware of the wider symptoms. I and most people I know just think of bleeding and pain so the last year I had no idea my hip pelvic back and leg pain could be related. I've had no bleeding at all but my other symptoms have been severe at times x

  • Absolutely agree with you on that. My bleeding should have been a real danger flag to me because I’d gone through the menopause already, but I had no idea about hip and leg pain until I started to speak to other women. I never connected those symptoms at all with cervical cancer, yet I had them to a lesser degree compared to the bleeding and pelvic pain. Women are well clued up to check for signs of breast cancer but not so knowledgeable about cervical cancer-I know I certainly wasn’t clued up on possible other symptoms. xx

  • I wasn't even asked about any symptoms other than bleeding at my consultant appointment and from reading posts on these chats all of them are common before diagnosis. I kept putting everything down to my job which may well relate to my pain too but definitely it definitely did not prompt me to think about a smear test so thank goodness my routine smear was due. Xx

  • Good luck for tomorrow, i hope the outcome isn't as bad as we always tend to think.

let us know how you get on, I still didn't get my results today. And this struggling to sleep is now starting to get to me x

  • Thank you. So my biopsy results confirmed severe dyskaryosis CIN3 so he removed a cm depth off my cervix via the lletz procedure. It didn't hurt at all. Quite crampy now esp when I bend over but not too bad. My affected cells seems to be more inside the cervix opening from the consultants explanation. I forgot to ask him if I had been tested for hpv. So another waiting game now for these results but just glad to get that bit done today and know my results.

So sorry to hear you are still waiting! Did you call them? Xx

  • Hi sweetie,  so hope your managing to have a nice night, the waiting is frankly the terrifying bit and it really isnt fair. As if you dont have enough to worry about, can I just say I was actually fast tracked on the 6 week rule but did still have to wait in between for appointments ect. Be honest I would take it as a good sign, they dont seem to think it is mega urgent so fingers crossed it's a smaller issue that can be sorted out forthwith at the clinic.  Maybe just abnormal cells fir instance which can be scrapped away,  sometimes an infection can cause abnormalities and swelling and symptoms such as spotting n cramping.  Easily fixed also with meds. I know this is all maybe and doesnt actually help you much but please dont fear the worst before you have any results.  Easier said than done I know.   I had my biopsy and the doctor took me to his office afterwards and told me he could see the tumour,  and explained he was passing me to cancer care. I was also given a nurse straight away for if I had questions.  Turns out I had stage 4 cervical cancer, I've been through an awful lot since, chemo  radiotherapy and bracytheraphy twice.  But the good news is that all my problems were 4 years ago...I couldn't be operated on so I have the disease for how ever long my life goes on. I still have 3 monthly check ups but touch wood am doing well at present.  Not been hospitalized since January and can go about my day in a pretty much normal way.  Just really letting you know if the news isnt so good you will have many options and research as come a long way even in the 4 years I've been I'll.  If you want any help or advise from someone that's been there then please yell,  I would be more than happy to support you.  Talk to your family and friends hun, its important you have their support also.  Hope to God you get good news or at least better news.  Take care of yourself as much as possible and talk to someone about how your feeling.  Please keep ringing, mither them daily you need answers or it will play with your mind.  Dont forget I'm here for you. Big hugs been sent your way. Xx
