Waiting on cervical biopsy results

Hello,

I'm new to this chat and currently driving myself insane. I'm 34 and a mum of a 7 year old boy. I have always attended my smear tests and a year before having my son I had abnormal cells and a biopsy sent but no further treatment needed. Just more frequent check ups.

All of my smears since came back normal until my recent one in July this year.  I recieved a letter after missed phone calls from colposcopy saying an appointment had been made for me as CIN3 and severe dyskaryosis with moderate changes had been detected.

At my colposcopy appointment my consultant said it was unusual for such a high grade change in a short space of time. He took 2 biopsys and said he wanted to wait on results before performing any treatments. That was on 6th September.

I have been back and forward to my gp from the beginning of this year with constant pelvic, hip, leg ,lower back pain, constant period like cramps and feeling beyond exhausted. However it wasn't until after my biopsys that I learned this can all be symptoms of cervical cancer so I have been worried to say the least.

I rang the clinic today to ask if there was any update on my results. The receptionist said my results are back but the doctor is off this week! And they will send a letter with results. I'm just finding it very frustrating now knowing my results are there and I don't know what they say. Would the lab have sent my results to my GP also or does the consultant have to write his report 1st?

Sorry for such a long post x

  • Evening lilybilly,

on one hand it's good you have had your letter, and I'm assuming maybe (from other post I've read) that when it says treatment that the treatment maybe done there and then? I could be wrong, but if the case then hopefully just mild cell changes.
I'm cross with myself at how I've let this effect me; my job too is very physical and I have to be up beat all day for members that come in. By the time I get home, and see still no letter my patients and mood changes dramatically. Its good that you have a partner there.
when is your appointment? Have they made you wait long since receiving your abnormality letter?
    xx

  • Hi. That's what I'm hoping for on Friday. Get the treatment and hopefully not have to worry anymore. My appointment is this Friday at 2.10. Two weeks after they looked at my biopsy results and rang me to say I have to go back in. Oh me too i feel sorry for my partner having to deal with my mood. As you say you can change in an instant. The slightest things will set you off. X

  • I've heard nothing again today, but trying to have one evening at least where I don't do my own head in!
Your app on Friday literally just said for changes and treatment?
I'd hope and I'm sure if anything more sinister they would have worded it different.
fingers crossed maybe just quick cell removal ( the loop) and you can move forward. Even that can be daunting for some.

  • Hello Lilly and Lilybily

How stressful for you both waiting for your results.Consultants tend to want to see you in person with results so that they can explain everything that has been found, and describe exactly what treatment will be done.

When I had cervical biopsies done my results were back within a week as I did have cancer, but hopefully you will both get results which say “only” abnormal cells(which are not cancer) and treatment can be carried out, perhaps there and then. I know it’s horrible waiting for results..and I do hope the waiting is over soon and you can give a huge sigh of relief! Good luck. xx

  • Yes I was frustrated with the letter it just said the biopsies have dected abnormalities which will require treatment. That was it. But at least it's soon now so I'm looking forward to hopefully being more relaxed and stress free after. Will you try and ring the clinic soon if you don't hear anything? X

  • Hi minska. I'm so sorry to hear your results. Are you recieving treatment at the minute? It honestly has been agonising waiting. When my results were delayed for 2 weeks with the consultants being off I thought it would have been better news after waiting so long but as you say hopefully just removal is needed to sort everything out. Thank you for your response x

  • Hi Lillybilly

I finished my treatment last christmas eve-chemo and radiotherapy. My stage was too advanced for a hysterectomy. Got my NED ( no evidence of disease) result at the beginning of April this year and now regular check ups. I’m waiting for scan results at the moment and that waiting never gets any easier! Xx

  • Did your letter say about taking someone with you for support? When a friend had hers, her letter didn't say much either but did say that she may want to take someone along with her this of course panicked her more.
I will wait till end of Friday and then maybe just call my doctors just incase the letter has been lost in post. See if they've heard. (My post isn't great to be fair)

I've been so tired lately, it's draining, I'm hoping once this is all done I'll feel like a new women.

please try not to worry too much re Friday, your partner sounds like great support. And we're all be thinking of you.

  • Evening Minska,

ive a few questions to ask my consultant if they come back abnormal as I was referred there just over two years ago with the same symptoms. Bleeding after sex, spotting and I feel smelly bits haha. However they only swabbed me then (can't remember a biopsy at that time) especially not the 4 like this. On that occasion they rang me with results, said that I had BV and that would be the cause of bleeding. So me being me, just assumed for the last two years that I was getting re occurring BV. Swabs taken this time at docs we're all clear, and a speedy referral happened.
So few questions to ask once I hear back this time.

I did have abnormal cells about 6 years ago, but they only needed brushing off. Nothing major.

what cancer did you have, fingers are crossed for you that it all comes back clear this time xx

  • No it didn't say anything else other than an appointment had been arranged for me. I'm going over on my own on Friday. My partner offered but I said I would be ok ad he gets very anxious. I do kind of like going to appointments better on my own so I can process everything then talk when I'm ready if I need to. My consultant did ask me the last time was someone with me but I think he just meant for after the procedure if he was going to do it that day incase I felt faint or anything.

The 1st time I got a biopsy taken in 2010 I did faint after but I think I just seen too much when I got up as the dish was still sitting below me at the bed. Do ring up before the weekend if you haven't heard anything. It's such a relief being able to speak to people on here as friends and family can only offer support without knowing exactly what's running through your mind.
