Colonoscopy

Is it possible to be completely anaesthetised for a colonoscopy? I may have to have one as I have had severe constipation and the doctor is suspecting fecal impaction. I had one a year ago ( I have had 2 previously) and it was absolute agony - I screamed !! I have IBS and diverticulitis and assume this is why it is so difficult for them to perfection the procedure. I am now terrified of ever having it done again

    I'm sorry to hear that you are having some health issues at the moment that may mean you need to have further investigations at some point. 

    I'm unable to say if a Consultant would routinely offer a general anaesthetic for a colonsocopy as there are risks associated with having an anaesthetic.

    I know that many members here who've had a colonoscopy have talked about having sedation which has left them very sleepy and unable to remember the procedure.

    It's important that if, and at the moment your post suggests it is a possibility and not a certainty, you need this procedure do speak to the Consultant about your concerns.

    Hi, I didn't have to have the colonoscopy as my problem eventually 'righted itself' ! I do still think that if I ever did have to have another one in the future, that I would pay to go private . ..
