Mole on back has changed shape and itches!

Hi, I have a mole on my back. Had it since a child. I'm 31, not in great health as I have inflammatory arthritis so on immunosuppresant drugs.

Anyway, the mole has started itching and I've noticed its changed shape with rugged edges.

I'm fed up with being at the hospital/doctors all the time. I bet its nothing but husband has been on at me for a while now to get it checked. What is likely to happen if I go to see GP?

  • Hiya,

I had the exact same symptoms but mine was in my belly button (Gross right) and was itchy and had a funny shape but it was concerning as I saw that skin cancer had the same symptoms which made me see the GP as soon as possible as the quicker  the investigations the quicker it's done and dusted. The Gp put me as a 2 week wait referral which is for suspected cancers and I got it checked out by a dermatologist and it turned out to be nothing.

I definitely think it's worth going to the GP so they can have a look and if needs be have a dermatologist look at it, it's better safe than sorry and if it has changed shape and got itchy I think that warrants having a trip to the GP, but if you've had it for a while it might just be something little irritating it

    Hope everything goes well.

    :)

  • Hi,

As already advised, get it seen by your GP. If it meets the critera for a dermatology referral & they think it's urgent you will get an appointment within 2 weeks. Sometimes a GP may think it needs checking but it's not urgent so it can take about 10 weeks to be seen. Or the GP may think the itching is due to a simple skin complaint. Don't leave it though as, if it is dodgy, the longer you leave it the harder it is to treat. Good luck and please let us know how you get on,

    Angie (melanoma patient)
