Terrified of enlarged lymph nodes

Hi all.

I'd say my case is slightly different than those I've already read on here. In July of this year I ended up with mumps of all things! Lasted around a week and inflamed the left side of my face and nodes of course. Since then however I've had persistent issues with slight aches and pains in that area of my face, before discovering a lump underneath my jaw line and one at the back of my neck.

My 1st GP appointment I was sent away under the pretence that my nodes were still inflamed as a result of the mumps, they still persisted however in size and feeling (they do move but are fairly hard)

The 2nd appointment I had the usual checks blood pressure listened to my chest felt my stomach and then some blood tests which came back clear. This however has still not reassured me and I'm terrified right now, especially as a 23 year old.

I'm waiting on my 3rd gp appointment in around 2 weeks to request an ultrasound.

I'm an active lad who clocked around 37 miles of walking this week. I don't appear to be displaying many symptoms apart from occasional chestiness, I'm sweating at night but not soaked or drenched as I've heard night sweats described just my legs are quite damp. I have however moved into a new house and the new room temp might be an adjustment plus the weather (who knows!)

I would greatly appreciate some reassurance

  • Hi, you must still be very worried about the lump but maybe your doctor is correct, I couldn’t have walked 5 mins never mind run lol, you are young and fit but if it still worrying you, you must go back to your doctor. My bloods were all ok but I had stage 3 lymphoma, my lump didn’t move so maybe yours is just a reactive lymph node and they can tell the difference with an ultrasound, they wouldn’t do a biopsy if they didn’t think it was necessary, it is the only way to diagnose what kind of lymphoma it is. Fingers crossed it goes down in time.

  • Thank you for the reply and concern. I hope everything works out for you too

  • Hi all. My node is still swollen and I've been experiencing symptoms of recurring chest issues and back pain. Starting to get a little afraid now so I'm going back to doctors.

  • Hi scones hope your well and you don't mind me asking, what symptoms did you have?? I had a scan on a lump behind my ear just 2 weeks ago and the sonographer on the day told me it was a reactive node and go to go if it gets bigger. Well it has got bigger it's rock hard and doesn't move, then last week I got a letter from the hospital I attended asking me to come in Tuesday so I'm a little worried to say the least!
Iv been extremely tired to the point I nod off when I sit, breathlessness, but I've suffered with low iron for so long those 2 are also symptoms of that so I put it down to that. Iv had soaking night sweats but not all the time. The past couple of weeks Iv had neck ache, not the lump itself as that doesn't hurt at all, but my neck is aching and today it's worse like it's pulled. I only have to wait until Tuesday but my anxiety is through the roof! I also have ear pain and fullness I think that's because this lump is pressing on something xx

  • Hi Louise, it’s a very worrying time for you, I know how you feel. I wonder why they have asked to see you when they thought it was a reactive node. I was told at the time when I had my ultrasound and biopsy that it was probably thyroid problem but it was 3/4 weeks later when the ENT consultant called me because I was going on holiday the next day, that he told me I had lymphoma, they can only tell that by a biopsy. Maybe your consultant playing safe and wants to do a biopsy. My symptoms were night sweats, (drenching) not every night but quite a lot. Fatigue, lost weight, itchy scalp which drove me crazy. I have auto immune problems and thought it was that causing these symptoms. It was when the lump in my neck wouldn’t go away, I went to my GP. When she examined me she told me she was putting an urgent referral to an ENT specialist and to go even it went down. That set alarm bells ringing. I did have slight breathing problems as well which was prob down to the enlarged lymph nodes at each side of my lungs. I coped well with chemo but unfortunately for me I only got 6 weeks remission till it came back. I go to see my haematologist every 3 months now and am on watch and wait, they won’t do treatment just now. I feel really well so I’m glad and hope it continues for a long time. Let us know how you get on. Hopefully the time will go in quickly, maybe it’s just a follow up appointment. Fingers crossed.

  • I kind of wish I didn't know about the itchy scalp.. as I've been suffering that too. Really really concerned now :|

  • Scones I'm so sorry it's back, I'm glad you feel well I'm really upset they can't give you treatment, so does this mean they can never offer you treatment now?
I have no clue why they have called me back and within 2 weeks, I work at a hospital myself so I know how quick that appointment is, when he done the scan I didn't feel like he was talking about the same thing as the measurement he gave me didn't seem right but I have no clue about ultrasounds so I just left it. I'm glad they have called me back as it is bigger, my partner and friend has felt it and said it doesn't feel right. I mean it could be anything so I'm trying to be possitive there's just this thing in my head niggling away! It's 1st thing Tuesday morning so not much longer. Like you say they can't say until I have a biopsy maybe he's going to suggest to have 1. But yes I will let you know. Thank you for your help  xx

  • Hi SH96, I didn’t mean to worry you in fact my haematologist said that was really unusual for that to happen so maybe it was nothing to do with the lymphoma. It did go after first chemo treatment so who knows.

  • Hi Louise, lymphoma can be slow growing or aggressive. Mine was slow growing rare form of lymphoma called Nodal Marginal Zone Lymphoma. I did have “B” symptoms and it had spread down my body. If maybe you have no B symptoms or perhaps only stage 1 or 2 they don’t usually do treatment but call it “watch and wait” so treatment is only determined by the multi disciplinary team. Patients may never need treatment but because mine relapsed, it’s in my neck and X-ray showed nodes at side of my lungs again, I’m basically waiting till it gets worse but hopefully it will stay like this for a few years. Try not to worry, there are lots of tests to do before any decision is made. Mine took three months before treatment started. Biopsy in neck, this tells them what kind of lymphoma it is, then ct scan, this determines what stage it’s at, I also had another biopsy under my arm which I didn’t even notice the lump, then I had a bone marrow biopsy. It was agony waiting all this time, in fact by this time I as actually glad when treatment started. Hope this helps you, I will get treated when and if the time is right. Best wishes.

  • Hi Scones, of course i understand, I appreciated the insight and advice. Just once you get an idea in your head you can't get it out!
