Anyone else going through a similar? (worried bowel cancer)

Hi guys,

While there is loads of background i'll try and keep it short.
My whole childhood i was severely constipation, impacted, enemas, laxitives, you name it.
Then as i turned 21 things started changing a little, bowel movements were more frequent, not hard to pass - all good.
Then during my 3rd pregnancy I started noticing my bowel movements getting very loose and frequent.. put down to pregnancy.. this continued into my 4th. I had blood in stools, and they began to get very mucusy. Delightful I Know.. again put it down to pregnancy... my 4th was born last year, he has had a rollercoaster of a ride and contracts major infections ( sepsis, meningitis, brain infections, septicimia etc) so you could say I have been on that rollercoaster with him and put a lot of my own worries to the side, or put a lot of things down to stress... which brings me to present..

Last month i decided to finally go to the gp as i couldnt stand the fatigue, I was practically sleeping standing up and having 4 children to look after I had to do something about it.

Blood tests taken - high cortisol, anemic and b12 severe deficency along with folate.
Cushings test negative...
So as i was speaking to the endo he asked what do you think is causing your anemia if you're diet is pretty good.
I explained i think im not getting a chance to absorb anything as my bowels are moving all day, theyre very loose etc.. and he said lets test for celiac,

Well while I have been waitin for the past 2 weeks for the celiac test to come back I began to think about my bowel movements more... there has been times ive had bright red blood fill the toilet bowl... other times my stools are extremley loose and can be streaked, other times when do form any sort of shape rather than loose theyre about as thick as my ring finger... but more recently ive noticed darker spots, black in appearance not loads and not in every stool but say every few and thought oh maybe its undigested food?? but inside im also think umm this could be dried blood..

Anyway, thought ok enoughs enough, ive pain in my side, im so bloated and gassy and uncomfy even though im passing so much in terms of stools each day, theyre like mucus, with changes in shape and type lets just see what the dr says.. when im there she tells me my cealiac test is negative so thats out the window... i explained the blood she thought piles so she checked me out... i apparently dont have one single pile in or out, she said my tummy felt tender and the blood in the bowl was too much... so she wants samples of poop, she did more blood and has reffered me on for a scope.

How long did most of you wait for a colonscopy to come through, did you have to see a consultant first before they would give you one?

She only mentioned the words maybe crohns or collitis... but something is telling me there could be more to this... anyone going through the same, or anyone recently diagnosed with similar symtoms.

  • Hi there - sorry you're having all these issues & I can understand why you're concerned. I've been having bowel problems too but not as bad as yours or for as long. I'm also waiting for a colonoscopy & I had to see the Consultant before it could be done so I expect it will be the same for you. I did have one booked a couple of months ago but the 'stuff' you have to take before it didn't stop working until well after the time of my appointment & so it was cancelled. I think to some extent the time you will wait will depend on the area you live but I would guess it would be a couple of weeks at least after you see the Consultant & that isn't always very quick.

Re: the Movi-prep (the stuff for clearing the bowels) I won't take it again because I was told it does happen sometimes that it doesn't stop when it should. There is something else so I'd ask for that if I were you - the Consultant I saw last week is going to give it to me.

Hope this gives you a bit of info at least. Good luck - hope all goes well for you.
