Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • My doctor rang me on Friday. It was his day off but he said he got my results in and was doing an urgent referral for me to see a specialist as my results are classed 2ww. He said my calcprotein was normal but my FIT was raised so he will push it. He is lovely and on the ball so hopefully I'll get my appointment soon. It's the waiting and not knowing that is worrying but I guess I just need to be patient. Good luck with your colonoscopy. Hope it all goes well for you. X

  • Hi all, I had blood tests beginning of this year because of chronic diarrhoea. Blood tests done this month shows low Iron, still have daily diarrhoea multiple times a day. I did a FIT test this week, checked my NHS app and it states "abnormal result, no further action required" quite concerned they aren't taking further action with an abnormal result frequent diarrhoea and low iron. Does anyone have any experience of this or advice? Thankyou

  • It is unusual from what I've seen before on here they would normally put you on the 2 week urgent referral maybe you need to look into this further ,I had very similar symptoms except my bloods showed elevated ca125 ,you might want to check your fit test to see what it was .

  • Test result - FAECAL IMMUNOCHEMICAL Report, Abnormal, No Further Action.

Coded entry - Quantitative faecal immunochemical test (Xaf0H) > 200 ug/g; Rapid pathway to STT colonoscopy/CTC - (OP if; patient too frail) - the STT team shall contact; your patient directly to arrange investigation.

This is what is said, I've removed any personal information. I don't know if that's my result or just the guidelines.

  • Hi

I had a positive fit test in December with low iron they sent me for a 2ww referral I had to have the colonoscopy turned out to be internal hemorrhoids maybe ask your doctor why you haven't been sent for a referral to just check ...hope the diarrhea goes for you hun xx

  • Yes I'll be ringing Tuesday, just confused why I've done a test for them to not take action with an abnormal result plus low iron. I'm only 29 so maybe my age

  • It does actually sound like you will be going for a colonoscopy and that maybe the fit test was 200 and you'll be referred .I think it could be your results .

  • Reading your message again it looks like you will be going for a colonoscopy I had similar message thinking about it ...the colonoscopy is fine...I'm 35 I had my colonoscopy in January bowel was healthy just 2 piles lol...anything can cause a positive test best to get it checked through hun xx
