Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Hi the same but have not had my colonoscopy yet I go for it on the 23rd December getting a bit worried

  • They will have to contact you to get your prep for the colonoscopy to you. Do you have a letter from the Endoscopy unit? Phone them on Monday if you havent heard from them by then as you need the bowel cleansing mixture. Unpleasant few days before, during and after the procedure to be honest.

  • No, due to the position of the haemmeroid they are leaving it. Its not really going to be possible to observe it as it shows no symptoms to me, no blood visible when I go to the toilet or pains. So really the only way to look at it again is via a colonoscopy, which without symptoms they wont do without another failed FIT test.

So it looks like I am left with the haemmeroid until it clears itself up, although I may never know whether its gone or not.

  • Hi thank I will contact them tomorrow let you no how I get on thanks

  • Hi everyone,

I have found this thread very useful and strangely comforting over the past few weeks so I thought I would share my story.

Having reached the grand old age of 56 recently I was sent a 'Stool test' which I duly completed sent back and forgot about....... 2 weeks later I get the results back...... positive....... being the raging hypochondriac I am the panic sets in.

Googled everything under the sun and like many of us I suspect couldnt see any other outcome than the dreaded obvious.

I have suffered with early morning stomach cramps and bloating on and off for over 25 years and had always put it down to IBS....... it comes and goes....... may have it for a month and then nothing for 6 months. Well the stress of a 'positive' test immediately started me off the next day on the worse bout of pain and bloating i have ever had.

I started looking at every stool, poking and prodding and then the big 'bomb shell' I found blood........ that was it my worse nightmare was becoming a reality.

I am lucky to be in a postion where I use a private GP........ got in to see him the next day..... he prodded and poked and said it all seemed ok but at my advanced age it would be prudent to get a Colonoscopy anyway.

Fast forward 2 weeks during which time my symptoms got worse and I had no appetite and the weight was dropping off............. I was really worried now.

The day of the Colonoscopy, 3 days ago, arrives and I am a nervous wreck by now.

I was promised lots of sedation...... not enough for my liking though.... it was slightly unpleasant but not horrendous but the Consultant (I went privately) seemed to want to give me a commentary so I got my moneys worth...... I just wanted it over!!

With in what seemed like a couple of minutes he proucly announced 'theres a Polyp' ...... carrys on with the torture saying everything looked ok and then announces he was going to remove the Polyp..... half an hour later it was all over he proudly showed me the 30 mm Polyp in a little pot and said there was your problem.

Relieved it was over I got wheeled back to my room and he comes and sees me an hour later and confidently explains that he will send the Polyp off for inspection but he was sure it was all ok but I would need another inspection in 3 years.......... something to look forwrd to then!! He went on to say that I was very tense and believed that contributed to IBS symptoms in many people..... what he meant was Neurotic idiots like me were more prone to IBS!!

I really thought I was staring down the barrell of the gun with this but thank fully it all turned out OK and I hope my experience might bring a little comfort to those of you going through this nasty 'not knowing' phase....... God  bless you all.

  • Hi all, pretty new here. Had a couple of tests due to diarrhea, bloating and pain. Have not seen any blood but FIT test showed blood and I have a positive result.  Can anyone explain the results to me as they seem extremely high! 110 ug/g.  I'm 43 years old and thought I had IBS all my life.

I'm really nervous so any thoughts/ explanation or other on my results would be appreciated.

    Thank you. :)
