Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Hi.

I hope your scan shows some positive news. I work with a lady and her husband had the same experience as yourself;  treatment and passing of time, he’s now 5 years clear and I hope you’re treatment will be the same.x

I totally agree with your comments, can’t be to relaxed, . I had bowel problems, dihorhea every single day for 9 years, I looked a mess but still after numerous visits to GP I was told it was IBS for 9 years untila new GP started at the practice and asked if I had ever been given a FIT test. I didn’t even know what a FIT test was. If I had read your post, I would have absolutely insisted on a colonoscopy.

  • Thank you have to wait another 3 weeks to find out but fingers crossed.

have you had the FIT test now? Have you been referred for a colonoscopy? I wish you all the best.  If you need treatment it's not as scary as you think let me know how you get on xx

  • Thank goodness I found this site!!

Long-standing stomach issues and piles/fissures over 25 years. After various consultants, gastroscopy and sigmoidoscopy doctors concluded it was functional and stress related. Fits in with my dreadful health anxiety.

Over the last month I've had a flare up with stomach ache so went back to dr who said just to be on the safe side to do a FIT test as I am 57. Out of the blue I got an email telling me there was a new test last night - apparently I signed up to be able to access my medical records some time ago.

I was of course curious and logged in eventually to see a FIT result of 17 - my GP won't have seen yet as it was added late last night!!!! I then googled what this meant and it sent me into a panic and a totally terrified sleepless night. I was totally convinced I had cancer and it was all over and that any colonoscopy was a formality.

Thanks to reading this thread I'm calmer and more optimistic that the reading may relate to my current fisure.  I will call Dr Monday not quite as fearful.

  • Hi,

im 38 and type 2 diabetes.

I had frequent diarrhea due to the type 2 medication.

After Medication change the frequency reduced a lot.

To investigate furthermore the GP did routine bloods and all good . Finally they gave me the FIT test , and to my surprise it was abnormal. 16mg/g

GP called me yesterday and did a urgent referral. I'm waiting for the consultation now. (Fingers crossed )

thanks for posting all your experiences. I'm less worried now.

    thanks to the community.

  • Continue to above post:

I ordered self testing  quit kit from Amazon and it came negative. I'm confused now. Can I ask GP to test one more time just to be sure ?

    thanks

  • Hi,

I'm just looking for an update? I'm 31, female and my FIT was 18. Worrying myself silly now!

    Hope that you are okay,

    J

  • It's such a long thread now I don't know if you're asking me, but I'll update anyway!

Been a few months since my colonoscopy, which the results were totally clear. They found a couple of polyps which wouldnt have explained the blood detected but they said the test can be super sensitive. Absolutely no evidence of anything sinister so they said come back when you're 50!

GP and I are assuming IBS and treating as such. Imodium here and there as needed and dealing with it! A lot of other symptoms like aches and pains went away as soon as I stopped stressing about having something really bad, funny what the mind can do!

You'll be fine I'm sure, but good luck.

  • That's amazing, I'm so glad to hear that everything has turned out okay! Imodium are the way forward, I'd be lost without.

Good to know that the test can be super sensitive, I overthink 24/7 anyway so I know how the mind can play tricks - it's a powerful thing!

Thank you very much, here's to hoping...

Have a lovely Christmas! Thank you for taking the time to reply, I really appreciate it!

  • Might as well add to the generally positive thoughts on this thread. Had a failed FIT test (13) with no symptoms and came back with identified higher up haemorrhoids, which explains the lack of symptoms.

Honestly, half this forum seems to be clogged up with people expressing extreme fear due to failed FIT tests, perhaps the NHS guidelines are a little over zealous considering the extremely low level of identified cancer, following a failed FIT test? 98% was a figure I heard.

Terrifying people uneccessarily for a couple of weeks to the point where they cannot eat or sleep properly just so certain targets are met, isnt neccessarily the best way forward.

  • I have had a QFit test done and it was positive at 23 is that good or bad
