Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Thanks for sharing your positive outcome. That's why I originally posted on this thread rather than starting a new one. So many people with positive FIT results having their colonoscopy and seeing good outcomes. I hope your biopsy results go well too.

Moviprep is working its magic. I think drinking it was worse than the actual effects. Not looking forward to my 5am dose though...

  • Hey there

Good luck with tomorrow’s colonoscopy. I came on this site when I had problems during covid. I met (on line) some lovely ppl and it helped me so much. A tip regarding the prep you have to drink...and I’ve had 4 or 5 colonoscopies now and it has helped me get through the prep every time.....drink it through a straw, it makes it easier for some reason perhaps because it’s going straight to your throat, and then after each glassful, I allow myself one bite of a lemonade ice lolly. It won’t cause any harm to your colonoscopy but it helps take the taste off after the glassful of prep; it’s what made me down the drink quickly just so’s i got the mouthful of lolly reward lol. Sorry if that is to late for your colonoscopy but I hope it helps anyone else. I hope all goes well.

  • Hello

Thank you for your kind words. This advice is definitely not too late for tomorrow morning's 2nd dose, which I am really not looking forward to! I tried the straw thing this evening for my first, not sure it helped a huge amount. But the ice lolly suggestion is an excellent one which I will definitely try.

I think it has taken 4 hours for this first dose to complete it's work on me from starting to drink it. I'm nervous about going to bed in case it isn't over yet!

  • Lizzabe, if your Fit test result is 10, then in the words of my GP, "I wouldn't lose any sleep over it, but it's always best to check" as 10 is the trigger point.  The doctor who did my colonoscopy told me with my score of 14.5 that it was unlikely he'd find anything.  As for your Calprotectin score, I was told that that's more of a screener for irritable bowel, which could be the alternative cause.  Either way, again quoting my GP, "it'll be a horrible few anxious weeks but you'll look back knowing that it was worth it going for the test."  You're not alone Lizzabe, it's a job that just needs to be done (no pun intended!).

  • Thank you for your reply.

I am seeing the consultant on Tuesday afternon , dredding the posibility of a colonoscopy as i cant tolerate any bowel prep.

Did they find anything on your colonoscopy? were you having any symptoms ?

  • Good news and bad news following my colonoscopy this morning.

Good news: no sign of cancer! (Subject to biopsy results, 4-6 week wait)

Bad news: they snipped one polyp off but didn't manage to cleanly remove a second (seemingly benign) one, so I have to go back in 3 months and do it all again. I was really hoping not to have to taste Moviprep for at least 5 years!!

No obvious reason for my elevated FIT score or the loose BMs I've been having for the last six weeks. They took some random biopsies to see if they reveal anything.

In terms of the prep this morning, I started my 2nd dose at 4.15am (woke up early, thought I might as well crack on with it). I was amazed to find I tolerated it a little better this morning. It was very cold from the fridge and I also added a LOT of ice cubes, as well as drinking through a straw.

The procedure itself wasn't much fun. The sedative seemed to have no impact, and I was in a lot of pain as they pushed the scope all the way up. Gas and air helped a bit, but it really wasn't easy. A huge relief when it was all over. The nurses and consultant were absolutely lovely and did their best to look after me.

So - same again in 3 months!! But hopefully this helps to reassure anybody else reading this thread - a FIT "failure" doesn't necessarily mean the worst possible outcome.

  • For what it worth - I recently got a FIT test result of 397 and spent three weeks waiting for my colonoscopy with all manner of awful thoughts going through my mind.

I wasn't feeling ill, nor had I lost weight, and thankfully all was clear - there was some minor unnoticeable bleeding from my rear end. The reason I want to share this is to let people know that a high FIT score isn't necessary a disaster, so please save the stress for after the colonoscopy - hopefully it won't be necessary!

  • Alternatively a negative FIT doesn't mean you are clear I had symptoms for over a year two trips to GP and two FIT tests and blood tests all came back normal.  Luckily had private health care so booked a consultant who recommended a colonoscopy this proved I had a tumour in my rectum and was diagnosed with bowel cancer.  Just completed 5 weeks of radiotherapy and awaiting a scan to decide next steps.  I just wanted to say if you are concerned at all please insist on a colonoscopy.  I could have been in recovery by now if I had received the colonoscopy back in April.

  • Wow. I would certainly have panicked with a FIT score like that. Just goes to show - it can mean a lot of different things.

  • Mummamo - so sorry to hear this. This is excellent advice. You must be so frustrated with the earlier diagnoses. I really hope your radiotherapy has had the right effect and that you are on the mend. Take care & stay positive.
