Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Hi!

Thank you so much for sending your message, it has helped calm my mind down a bit. Well done on getting through your colonoscopy - was it unpleasant? I guess it is worth it to be given the all clear ... I just need to try to keep my mind calm until I get my appointment...

  • I won't lie mate, it was unpleasant as I couldn't have the sedation so I would defo recommend getting sedated, it was uncomfortable in parts and then not to bad, but its so worth it with the probable good news you will get afterwards

  • I had one 2 weeks ago with sedation I never felt a thing and I couldn't believe it was over it felf like a few  minutes ,that was my experience .

  • Well done for getting through it.  I am definitely going for the sedation.  I had an endoscopy (down the throat) a while back and there is no way on earth I could have done that if I was awake.

  • That sounds really good - this is the experience I am hoping for!  Thank you for letting me know.

  • Latest from me.  The referral from my GP is with the consultant at my local hospital.  There is a backlog of referrals.  The consultant will review my details, and even though I have been referred as a fast track / two week case, they will decide based on my details whether I am really an urgent case (I'll get a phone call) or whether I can make a normal appointment for some time in the future (I'll get a letter).  I don't know if that's something specific to my hopsital or whether that happens with every referral of this type.

BMs are better than they were, still a bit loose but seems to be down to one or two a day now instead of double figures.  Still a nagging ache in my abdomen.  Still panicking, obviously!!!  Hoping I will get a letter but then also worrying they'll mis-assess me and that I don't want the delay.

  • I am booked in for next Thursday.

Glad that the procedure is happening fairly quickly.

Even more scared now because a consultant has looked at my case and decided, yes, this is an urgent case.

Incidentally, once piece of information that might help others going through the same thing.  I asked about adding flavouring to the sachets of bowel-clearing stuff, I was told that sometimes they come pre-flavoured with orange, and if not, it is safe to add orange or lemon cordial to it, but definitely not blackcurrant, as this will stain things and affect the review.

    im 37

  • Colonoscopy tomorrow morning. I've started the Moviprep. Didn't taste as awful as I expected initially, but half a litre in and I'm not sure the second half will be as easy... I will be very glad when this is all over...

  • Good luck for tomorrow. I wish all the people on this post well.  This post was a big comfort to me and also had good suggestions.

I have my colonoscopy just over a week ago. The actual procedure wasn't that bad, I did have sedation. The nurses and doctors were great.
The laxative was the worse part to be honest, especially first thing in the morning, but that wasn't as bad as I expected either.

Actually this worst thing was the worry, it's hard to remember that it might not be something sinster. I had a positive FIT result, but the colonoscopy couldn't find anything suspicious. I am still waiting on bysopy results but fingers crossed nothing was found. Still waiting other tests to find what is causing my pain.

I hope that you all get good news too.
