Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • I 100% know how you feel. I was a mess the weeks before because all I could think about was the cancer possibility. Even checking life insurance policies and struggling to look forward to anything just in case!

good luck though, let us know how it goes

  • Wow this is great news and tbh the kind of post I've been looking for , to aid some reassurance. My GP has frightened the life out of me because I've had some bowel symptoms and then like yourself some anxiety symptoms. My FIT score was 21 and the GP literally said it's too high and her words not mine "indicative of cancer"   I'm petrified now , I'm just waiting to have a colonoscopy although will probably end up with a CT one as had a failed one a few years ago due to Dr being unable to "get in " due to pain.
    so so pleased your ok

  • GlYes, my doctor did the same and made it sound very serious.  It really didn't help.   Obviously they don't know what the cause is so have to be careful what they say, but would prefer if they were on the more positive side.

Glad you have your colonoscopy booked in.  They sedated me when I had mine.  I wouldn't normally have sedation, but I asked for the maximum amount and I couldn't remember a thing.  It really helped.

Keep me posted on the results.

ad you have your colonoscopy booked in.

  • My fiancé had his colonoscopy on Thursday, however they couldn't complete it as they couldn't get past an inflamed area, so he had to have a CT.

Good news so far is they've said no cancer was found in the part they examined through the colonoscopy, but he have to wait for the CT scan results for the full all-clear.

They've tentatively said diverticulitis is more likely and he has been given strong antibiotics for the next 7 days. So we are in a hopeful wait and see period at the moment.

The Plenvu prep was not great. He took the first drink and it didn't do too much until about 3 hours later, at which point he took the second drink that made him violently sick. It was an unpleasant night, which meant he also had to have an enema the morning of the appointment.

Hope everyone else is doing ok.

  • I think I needed this thread. It's helped me a lot. I've had back pain and constipation for three or so months, did a home fit test which was positive and now waiting on the results of an NHS one. Nervous is an understatement but hearing some stories on here has helped compared to what Dr Google presents you with. I don't know my outcome yet, it may still be very scary but some stories on here have really helped me. Good luck everyone.

  • Hi.

I am so worried. Originally went to doctor 3 months ago with pain in my testical. Been for ultrasound and waiting on results but the examination itself did not find anything other than a small cyst. More recently got groin pain, the adominzl pain and loose stools. Doctor did fit test which came back positive. Now told need urgent colonoscopy.
cant understand how bowel cancer could cause these symptoms. Managed to convince myself only answer is that the cancer has spread and that the outlook is terminal so scared that I have been awake all night and literally don't know how I can get through this.
have a beautiful 11 year old boy and can't help be scared of leaving him.

  • Hi

Would anybody mind if I join this discussion please...

I have had slightly loose BMs in the morning for as long as I can remember as an adult.  A few months ago I had diverticulitis, quite painful and needed a course of antibiotics to clear.  About a month ago I suddenly started getting some pain in my upper abdomen, much looser BMs, quite a lot of wind and cramping.  Put up with it for a week then contacted my GP.  In the meantime pain had moved to lower down in my abdomen.  Not severe pain but uncomfortable.  Stool sample taken, to check for infection I think, came back clear.

I still wasn't right, pain had evolved into a constant dull ache in my lower abdomen.  Occasional nausea in the morning.  No obvious blood in my BMs.  Some days with lots of loose BMs, others with hardly any.  Went back to GP, they arranged a range of blood and stool tests including a FIT.  Saw the practice nurse yesterday who said majority of tests were fine but FIT was "high" and therefore I am being referred for an urgent colonoscopy, in the next two weeks.  Naturally I am now terrified and imagining the worst.

My grandad died of bowel cancer so they seem concerned about the risk for me.  I am a 48 year old male by the way.

The nurse had a good prod around of my abdomen, no pain from this.  She listened to my abdomen through a stethoscope and said it was constantly churning and gurgling.

The nausea in the morning is getting worse, I properly threw up this morning, which isn't helping with my fear of what this could be.

I'm trying not to dwell on the worst case outcome, and this discussion has been unbelievably belpful, seeing so many stories of people in the same position who end up with relatively good news.

I suppose I just need to wait for the colonoscopy and brace myself for the preparation involved!

Edit: I got hold of a load of printouts of test results from my GP.  Faecal Haemoglobin (FIT) score is 27 mg/g.  Am I right in saying that although this is classed as "high" it is relatively low compared to what some of you have seen?  I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Full blood count all seemed fine other than Lymphocyte count which is 0.6 where a normal score is 1-4.5.  I think this has to do with the ability to fight off infections?  I have had Long COVID for 12 months so maybe not surprising I'm at a low ebb on that score.  (Fatigue, headaches, memory issues, fast heart rate, palpitations, allergic-type reactions to food, several suspected heart attacks that turned out not to be... it's been fun and games.)

Serum Ferritin (iron levels?) is 62 where a normal range is 15-300 - so a little on the low side but not bad.

Faecal calprotectin content is less than 20 mg/g where I think the aim is to be lower than 80.  That one says "no evidence of GI inflammation".

Not sure what to make of all those results other than wondering how scary the FIT score is...

  • Hi ...

Sorry to hear your having a rather difficult time

    I hope I can reassure you ..

my Qfit test was also 27 and my calprotection was 64

    I've just seen consultant following

    CT Abdomen And CT Colonscopy

she reassured me that 27 was low for Qfit test

Colonscopy showed Diverticula disease throughout my

bowel and that's why QFIt was 27 low count .

I really hope you get your tests done soon and results will

    Be ok..

it is an anxious time waiting to get the investigations done

Mine was all done within the two week time scale ..

    of the Bowel screening programme

    I hope will helps you

all the very best wishes try and relax but I know that is very difficult to do . Oh and stay away from Google

  • Hey, please try not to worry too much, I had positive fit and had colonoscopy today! No cancer found, 2 tiny polyps removed. Was told abnormal fit result was probably due to bleeding from a strained or burst blood vessel when taking the actual stool sample!

    Good luck x

  • Hi Rosie

Thank you so much for replying!

I'm really pleased that your investigations didn't find anything too awful. You must be so relieved! It's also great to see somebody saying that 27 is a low result - the nurse I spoke to about my results looked really very worried...

Diverticula disease isn't great I guess - is that the cause of the blood that your FIT identified?  I have been wondering whether the diverticulitis I had earlier in the year might have been the cause of the blood in my sample.

You're absolutely right about Google. I honestly think the only sensible source of information I have read is this discussion thread and all the lovely people telling their stories.

Relaxing will be very hard until I've had the investigation, but I will try not to worry myself to death in the meantime.
