Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Hi All, thought I'd join this thread as it seems to be the most useful with FIT tests and CRC fears!

I'm male, 33 and had a pretty bad bout of diarrhoea for 7 days about 4 months ago and things went back to normal so wrote it off as a bug, but now I've had loose stools again for 11 days so far coupled with back pain, feeling bloated and full all the time meaning I can't eat much, and feeling like I haven't fully emptied. Did a FIT test convinced it was something like IBS and it came back as a 16, which I hear is fairly low but still enough to be referred for a colonoscopy.

Waiting for the referral now and going out of my mind. Of course I'm reading everything online and it ticks every single box for cancer and it's causing so much stress. I know logically it's still on the unlikely side but I'm struggling to find many examples of people having so many symptoms that I have and it not being cancer!!!

  • Hi incase this helps, I also had recurrent diarrhoea (along with other symptoms like blood in stools). My FIT test came positive at over 400ug/g. This was in March and it took until now for me to get fast tracked for a referral.

I got referred for a sigmoidoscopy (looks at part of the large intestine instead of the whole) and it just turns out I have haemorrhoids. I didn't think I could have it as I remember reading the bowel cancer symptoms and it saying:

"blood in the poo without other symptoms of piles (haemorrhoids) – this makes it unlikely the cause is haemorrhoids"

I didn't have other symptoms of haemorrhoids and my gp couldn't find haemorrhoids when she did the rectal exam. I was so convinced it was going to be something serious.

Hope all goes well for you. Try to keep a clear mind because there's no point stressing when you know you'll get answers soon. I know this is easier said than done.

  • Hey

Your situation sounds exactly like my partners situation. He's been told today that his results came back, but his is 18.

He has the same symptoms you describe down to a tee. I'm almost certain (read: hopeful) his will be IBS.

Hopefully you get your appointment soon

  • Hi,

Just to share some more positive light on test result nunbers.  My Fit test came back recently with a score of 499ug/g.  As you can imagine this seemed like an alarming number and panic set in.

There was no visible signs of blood in my stool.   I was fast tracked for referral,  a colonoscopy and a CT scan.

At this point I was very stressed.   It got to the point that my stress was creating more symptoms,  such as a sore stomach,  back pain,  more trapped wind, looser stools,  etc.   Its amazing what the mind can do.   Its a vicious circle and hard to relax and stay calm.

The colonoscopy procedure was painless with the sedation,  in fact I don't even remember it as I was quite sleepy.   The end result was a small pollop.   They took it out during the investigation and did some routine tests to ensure there was nothing to worry about.  It's amazing how something so small can cause such a high Fit result.

Ultimately its best to get checked out to ensure there isn't anything serious going on,  but hopefully this will provide some level of comfort in regards to some of the test result numbers returned and its not necessarily the worst case scenario to have a high fit test result.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi guys,

I've had my colonoscopy appointment booked for the 30th August... wish me luck... it's my birthday between now and then too!!!

  • Hi everyone,

Just had a positive FIT result today, 117. I'm now at maximum anxiety!

So some background....my dad had bowel cancer at 48, im now 41 so I have been very twitchy and checking my stools regularly. I thought I saw a bit if blood on wiping a couple of times but wasn't sure. I got in touch with my GP and asked about genetic testing due to my dad and mentioned possibly some blood on wiping. Since doing the FIT test I have definitely seen blood, not every day but its there so it wasn't a huge shock when I got my result.

I dont feel I have many other symptoms, suffered on and off with acid reflux for the past 10 years, a bit of bloating but I have also gained weight (because I'm greedy....nothing medical) so put that down to the weight gain. I'm now over thinking  everything!

Now to start the waiting game for a colonoscopy!

  • Just to keep it up to date, had my colonoscopy today and (while uncomfortable), went well. No signs of anything serious, just two benign polyps which seems to be pretty common.

For anyone wondering, the prep doesn't taste as bad as I was led to believe, but it worked a charm. Didn't trust a fart for 24 hours that's for sure. A bit of nausea but no vomiting. Pretty much felt like Delhi Belly.

The procedure I attempted with just the Fentanol, but ended up needing gas and air because I have what they term "loopy bowels". Very quick and nice and easy really, apart from the discomfort. Well worth it to put my mind at ease.

  • That's great news Craig. Did they remove the polyps whilst you were there?

  • They removed one for biopsy but said nothing cancerous, and left a few "benign diminutive" ones in there, presumably so small there's no point.

  • Good to know. My fiancé has his appointment next week, and whilst we're trying to stay positive, it's really hard
