Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Thank you so much for taking the time to update the post even though you had done it already. It's good to hear the positive results. Happy for you! It's good your getting extra genetic testing

  • Hi,

After I notice some strange small red area in my poo acouple of time in the past couple of months, my GP advised to have some blood tests and a FIT. The blood test came back normal and the FIT came at 10ug/g faeces. The note says "normal-no action", but if you look at the references should be under 10.

I am stressing out do this fact and not sure if this needs further investigations or not.

    what were your FIT values?

    many thanks in advance.

    Alex

  • Hi Alex.

I suffer from health anxiety so I chose not to ask. If I did I knew I would Google it, I am already fearing the worst. When I had an assessment she said that the number was not exceedingly high but did not go into detail. Sorry I cannot be of any more help.

  • Hello All,

Firstly, thank you for all the posts on here, they have been more helpful than my wife's gp. Over the past 3 months my wife has had a range of strange symptoms, constant pain in lower right abdomen that feels like cramping. Bloating and the need to have diarrhea which started about 8 weeks ago but has progressively got worse (5-8 times a day)

Just got the result of her fit test which was 13 and the gp has frightened the life out of her saying it's a significant marker for cancer. On this forum there is some really good information but more importantly peoples journeys through this.

We are waiting for the next stage (a call from the clinic) to book in for a colonoscopy.

Thank you all this forum has really helped

  • Hi,

I know this thread hasn't been used for a while but it was so informative. And please let me apologise for any descriptions of symptoms!

I'm a 43 year old male who at the start of the month started having uncomfortable gas/indigestion style cramping in my mid to lower left side.

This has been accompanied by some mild bloating, and of course our good friend diarrhea (well, loose stools not full blown diarrhea). I spoke to my doctor early last week and they requested bloods be done (I seen CRP on the form so that'll be the Cre-protein test mentioned earlier by others) among other things, as well as a fit test. I cannot see any blood and in fact have never experienced wiping with blood, my symptoms are mainly gastro related.

As I type this, and for the last few days, the cramp/indigestion style pains on my left side have gone and, here's the kicker, I now feel constipated and when I go to the loo I can sit there for a few minutes thinking, "Here it comes" only to break wind.

If I have a glass of water that usually kicks things into touch and I go, at which point I produce soft but formed poos that float (in the main), but they're rough edges, wide but not totally round and have what looks like little holes in them (kind of oval/narrow shaped - I'm really sorry!).

Even though my pain/cramp like symptoms have gone I do notice that I get a pain in my left hip if I turn a certain way, so the hypochondriac in me now thinks I have colon cancer that's spread to my bones ... I don't have any back pain.

I find that if I keep myself distracted with work or my kids, I'm fine but occasionally these bloods and qFit test I'm waiting on creep up on me and I start to worry and panic that I've got something seriously wrong with me.

I do have high blood pressure and have been taking Olmasarten for years - and Google says a side effect even years later can be gastro issues but after 16 years if they were going to cause stomach or bowel issues they'd have done it by now, right?!

Ive never had any IBS issues and at my age can you be suddenly and out the blue diagnosed with IBS or celiac? I'm trying to tell myself the fact the pain/indegestion type pain in my lower left side has gone away is a good thing - albeit it took 3 weeks!

I just get so overcome with worry about this being something far more sinister even with the lack of regular,  visible bleeding.

    Thanks for reading :)

  • Hi

I can see this is causing much anxiety with you, lets try and break it down into parts...

If you have the fit test and it comes back clear, great, be prepared that this test will detect the smallest amount of blood so even piles or a tear can give a positive result. If it does come back positive they will book you a colonoscopy.

I believe IBS can start at any age.

There's nothing like anxiety to cause gastro problems, aches and change in toilet habits. You say when you keep busy this improves.

Last but not least.... Please stay well away from Dr Google.... never does anyone any good and has caused many people to have false worries that they have got the worse posible cancer outcome.

Hope you get your tests done soon and you have good results in the meantime try and keep busy so your mind hasn't time to think about this.

Let us know how you get on.

  • Hi,

And thanks to "ineedabreak" for replying.

I have received my QFit and blood results back from the doctor and all are clear, nothing causing any concern on paper at least.

Doctor said my QFit was 7, so below the 10 threshold and liver, kidneys, blood work were all normal.

Symptoms wise, the pain on my left side has eased up albeit I still get the odd pangs and twinges but no constant, extreme trapped wind like pain.

My stools are still mixed, not 100% diarrhea but can change between loose & lumpy and starting a little solid and ending looser. I've yet to resume what I'd call "normal" stools which are more solid and formed.

I may order another fit test just to rule out a false negative, but at this stage I don't know if that's hypochondriac behaviour or caution.

  • Hi,

I have been having bad symptoms last 2 months, getting worse, but  lesser symptoms for much longer, these days feels like I take a laxative every night as next day I'm having a clear out, mostly soft (floating)and finishing wih Diarrhea and sore cramping, lost around 7lbs, maybe more? toliet was almost white then turned for a few days to almost green, after being prescribed folic tablets coulour changed to more normal but I haven't had a normal shaped toilet for a few months now.

my haemoglobbin was 126 and ferritin 23 and was low on folate serum on blood test, I did qfit test 3 weeks ago, I phoned for the results but the hospital said not allowed to tell me??? and have to wait for consultant to give me phone appointment, makes me think results were bad as they would tell me if qfit was normal?

I have lost my mother and younger brother (at very young age) to bowel cancer and i used to before covid get colonscopy every 2 years, have had bleeding polyps removed in the past, haven't had a colonoscopy for over 4 years now

of course I fear the worst, it looks very bad for me, I am suffering with symptoms every day and no one is helping me, just have to sit at home and worry until they decide to call me, I am 57 divorced and live alone, just have to try and get on with things but not easy.

please someone tell me the hospital is telling me the truth and that they are not allowed to give out qfit results and that it has to be done in a consultant's phone call, to me it looks like there was blood in it and they don't want to tell me but the secretary on the phone said that good or bad they can't say?

I take 300mg asprin every day for bowel cancer prevention??? and in the few blood tests i've had in the last 6 years or so my count was always borderline low, hoping against hope for an explanation that my poor blood results and symptoms are not cancer

  • It strikes me as highly unlikely that they wouldn't want to tell you if there was blood in your FIT test. For one thing, blood in stool is relatively common and not, in itself, something worry about and for another, they would surely want you to know more quickly if they were concerned and wanted to do further tests. I really doubt the hospital is lying to you. I can't see what benefit there would be in that. It is very likely that the same rules apply regardless of the results and the secretary simply isn't authorised to give you the results or doesn't have access to them him/herself.

Sorry to hear about your mother and brother and hope you get good news.

  • thanks for your reply Margaret/Mary, of course what you write is what I want to believe, I was surprised when the secretary would not tell me my results and had me fearing the worst, I do fear that hospitals are so swamped at the moment that what was once done urgently is no longer the case, I was told today up to another  6 weeks waiting time for a consultant telephone appointment after qfit test which i took more than 3 weeks ago, more than 1 month ago I was referred to the hospital by my GP for an urgent colonoscopy, I'm still weeks away from a telephone consultation let alone a colonoscopy and with symptoms slowly getting worse.

I at first took consolation that they'd not got back to me thinking well at least they found nothing in my qfit test or I'd have heard from them? I learned today after chatting to the secretary that was not the case and the reason I haven't heard is because of a backlog and staff shortages.

sorry for being so negative, extremely worrying time for me
