Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • thanks for the quick reply.  I probablty should have sedation but don't want to be out of it.

  • Dont worry it just completely chills you out I had mine on monday everyone was so nice and made me feel at ease and it was over before I knew it

  • Hi when is your colonoscopy? My one is tomorrow. Scared out of my mind. Symptoms for almost two years, and now they have finally given an appointment.

  • Hi, not until next Monday.  I hope all goes well for you and try not to worry.  I have been doing so much research and the likelihood of it being cancer is very slim.  Even if it is, it is an extremely slow growing cancer in the vast majority of people.  I am not so frightened of cancer as most.  Both of my sons, my mother and I have had cancer (not colon) and all been treated.  Let me know how you get on and good luck.

  • Hi thank you. What scares me the most is I’ve had blood in my stool for two years now. But they wouldn’t give me an appointment due to covid and I became pregnant. So now I’m 8 months postpartum and have finally got an appointment through. All the people that I have spoken to on here have long done their colonoscopy apart from me. Drinking the dreadful moviprep, it honestly taste absolutely disgusting. I love your attitude. I feel so panicky scared I may start crying in front of them tomorrow before the procedure.

  • You have to stay calm.  You are very unlikely to hve cancer.  If you do, it is likely to be treatable.  I

  • Hey lovely sorry you got that scare, I've had the same thing happen to me and due for my colonoscopy on Thursday. If you don't mind me asking how did yours go? I hope everything is okay now and your feeling better

  • Hi all, new to this thread but have been following for a couple of weeks. Keen to hear more positive outcomes if any of you have any to share.

im 26 years old, female, my mum had bowel cancer (she is fine now). I had a positive FIT result a couple of weeks ago. Here's my timeline of events:

I've had IBS type symptoms on and off for nearly10 years (sometimes constipation, diarrhoea, stomach pain, bloating, unemptied bowel feeling, acid reflux etc) but think it is usually triggered by stress, my period and sometimes spicy foods. Have been to docs on and off in the 10 years and never had official diagnosis. I went again this year and the GP randomly suggested FIT test.

I returned my test on 2nd September and then saw my result on the NHS app on 7th Sept and my GP called me the next morning. My result was 23 ug/g. My GP referred me for 2 week wait (cancer referral). I was called on 14th September by the hospital and they booked a phone appointment for 23rd Sept. I don't know what they will say but I hope they book me in for colonoscopy.

Trying to remain calm and rational but I've convinced myself I must have cancer. Have been watching this forum and hoping for good results for you all, and it definitely helps me when I see your good results too! @Gabsgabsx let us know how you get on.

  • Hey,

oh no so sorry to hear that! Be positive, I went through the exact same thing I'm only 25 myself too. I was so worried as I was in severe pain for about 4 weeks too, in and out of hospital. They wasn't any help until I got the positive FIT test.

i had my colonoscopy on Thursday. It was Terrible as the sedation didn't work on me so I felt everything. He said my intestines were a lot smaller than they should be and in the wrong position so warned me that it was going to be painful. My outcome was that I have IBD and he said soemthing called a spastic colon. I'm not too sure what that means. They were pretty worried beforehand as both parents caught really bad causes of diverticular disease and both had stoma bags, mum now for life.

but I think the outcome was better than expected so keep your chin up there is still hopes don't start worrying and overthinking until you get some answers lovely.

the pain is still quite bad for me so I'll be going back to the gynaecologist too as it could be two different things causing me pain around the same place. Good luck with your colonoscopy keep us updated [@semiquaver94]‍ xxx

  • i'm so sorry the colonoscopy was painful [@gabsgabsx]‍ ! and of course i'm sorry about the outcome as well, not nice to live with but im relieved for you that it wasn't worse.

did you only start getting pains recently? did they do any stool tests previously? i'm surprised to hear of a diagnosis of IBD at 25 as i thought usually it would be diagnosed earlier? but maybe i am wrong.

yes i know what you mean about the gynae issues. most of my bowel issues happen around hte time of my period and i find it very difficult to tell what sort of cramps i'm getting (bowel or menstrual) and always get constipated and painful gas on my period. i had a pelvic ultrasound in June this year and it was all fine. i also had a stool sample taken last year and my inflammation marker (fecal calprotectin) was within normal range and my bloods normal. so i guess I am worried it's something more sinister than IBD as i would have expected to be diagnosed by now! x

do keep in touch if you like and hope you get the gynae all-clear or some answers as well x
