Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Hi [@Kirky132]‍

Unfortunately Moviprep didn't agree with me! I had to do enhanced bowel prep (3 x sachets in 1 litre water each- 1 at 8:00, 17:00 and 20:00). I managed the 8:00 one with a straw and sipping water in between and that started my bowels, but only managed half of the 17:00 one before vomiting it up and couldn't keep any of the 20:00 down. I phoned the hospital the next morning and they simply rescheduled the colonoscopy for the following week and gave me Picolax instead (plus only 3 x 200ml glasses to drink than 3 litres!). That all worked fine and my bowels were clear for the colonoscopy last week. Apparently Moviprep just doesn't agree with some people.

What worked for the 8:00am Moviprep for me was chilling it in the fridge (you can put it in there just before you go to bed), drink it through a straw and sip water as you're drinking it.  Flat ginger beer helped too to reduce nausea. And keep drinking water the whole day and days leading up to prep day- the more you have the quicker everything gets flushed out. Also get some sudocrem and use wet wipes to reduce soreness. And if you work you will need to book the prep day off work, even if working at home. You're going to be on the toilet a lot with little notice.

I hope the prep and colonoscopy go okay. In my experience the prep was worse than the colonoscopy, the nurses do such a fab job of keeping you calm throughout.

    take care, L x

  • Hi.

    I'm 29, female.

this forum is so reassuring to read I'm not alone. I'm in a really dark place mentally waiting for my 2 week wait colonoscopy. I feel so much for the people who were put on hold because of covid.

last monday I went for a normal poo and tonnes of blood followed in the toilet bowel! I obviously freaked. My stool sample result were 260 meant to be under 50. Don't think that was a FIT test though. (Having to do that today) I'm continually bloated and gasssy I feel I'm loosing weight , blood when i wipe, going for poo more in the morning then not throughout the day, no appatite, nauseous. Dr thinks i have IBD , bloods clear.

BUT my anxiety is through the roof I don't know if that's why im so bloomin nauseous. My Gran died of bowel cancer aged 59. Obviously I'm thinking it's that. Drs can't rule it out. I'm off work and it's affecting my life. Longest two week wait ever. I'm not religious, but I'm even praying lol.

you lovely lot take care you aren't alone x Ali

  • Hi,

how are you now? I'm 29 and experienced the same as you plus a lot of blood and soooo bloated it's uncomfortable. Very nauseous too. My stool test was 265 so they were concerned too. I'm having colonoscopy in two weeks x

4 weeks ago my daughter came home from nursery and was sick over 2 days and nursery said there was a bug going around.. anyway fast forward 4 days and I start with diarrhoea didnt think much just thought I had caught this bug.. it lasted for a full week nothing was kept inside me panic starts.. I go to doctors have stools done and bloods all normal.. anyway diarrhoea stopped after a week and so I carried on with life.. 2 weeks later diarrhoea starts again I go back to doctors and she does a FIT test which came back as abnormal 43.. urgent colonoscopy I'd being done but I suffer from anxiety and it's off the charts at the minute.. I have 3 young children and I'm just scared to death.. I've got the phone consultation tomorrow I just hate the waiting it's so stressful

  • Hi,

My fit test was positive too and I had colonoscopy, and it wasnt anything serious. So dont worry too much its rare that its something serious. Follow the prep and good luck with your colonoscopy.

  • Glad to hear it was nothing serious.  I am awaiting my colonscopy and convinced myself that I have advanced cancer, although no symptoms!!  Did you have sedation with your colonoscopy?

  • Yes i had sedation, i thought it would be better to have it. Dont read too much over the internet, it can have many reasons which are not serious.
