Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Hi, just found this thread. Been diagnosed with IBS as recently as 1.5 months ago. Started with 1 line defense. Then kept complaining to doctor of a discomforting feeling. The doctor referred a FIT. Results today morning - >200 and referred for expedited colonoscopy. I've just turned 40, male, 2 kids and lots of family responsibilities. Pretty freaked out and scared, as I don't know what to expect. Family is trying to tell me it is nothing but am sure everyone's heart is in their mouths currently. Waiting for the folks to call to fix up the colonoscopy and I will force an endoscopy as well, after that. Also had my first ever acutel lower abdomen pain this weekend - the test was ordered before that. But the mind now connects the two things.

Anyone knows how long they take to call you and then from there generally how far away are the appointments from the day they call you?

  • Hi IBSNewbie,

I have had exactly the same this week! I am 41, have a 2year old and second is due on the 24th June. Absolutely terrified.

FIT @ >200 and urgent colonoscopy reaquestsd. This was on Wednesday and have got the appointment on Tuesday next week. So if you haven't recived it yet give your doctor a call.

hopefullly you have your appointment already, but thought I'd let you know me experience.

    Hope all goes well :)

  • Hi Devinch,

thanks for your message. I got the same reading. Will call the hotline tomorrow as the doctor asked to wait for 48 hours for them to call.

all the best with your test. Will keep posted about mine.

  • Hi,

To clear it. Had FIT Test positive in Jan Jan 2021. My GP did an urgent two weeks referral to Gastrology to Hospital in Jan 2021 and had initial checkup in hopital on 20 Jan 2021. Since then, I am waiting for the appointment.

Just to update: last two weeks tried few times to reach hospital with not much success about the status. Then contacted Patient Advice and Liaison Services (PALS). Today on call they confirm I am in waiting list for CT Colon. Accepted appointment will be in July-AUG 2021  I understand COVID Delays but 6-7 months in total appointments looks very long. Anyone recently notice this delay.

  • Hi

thats just not acceptable. You really, really need to shout up. I’d be on to my GP pushing him to chase it up and doing my nut with the pals department. You’ve already had time lost with their initial momentous *** up. You really need to chase their tail on this one hun. I’d tell you to ask for a referral to a different hospital but that would only put you to the back of the queue I imagine. Really though, You’re GP needs to pull his finger out too. Most hospitals have low covid patient numbers now so why are they not ploughing through the backlog of procedures; it’s almost like they are deliberately slowing treatments down in a bid to save money. Let me know how you get on. Good luck.x

  • Hi Hun. I had my result in April just as the 1st covid closedown begun. I waited until August for the operation. It’s difficult waiting, and I don’t know what the timescale is now but the number of covid patients is dropping so I imagine it should be sooner. I also started to imagine the worst conclusion and had panic attacks and I know it’s easier said than done, but please remember  there are so many simple things that can cause a higher result. Even bleeding gums when you clean your teeth and swallow the blood, internal piles etc. That said it doesn’t hurt to chase up your appointment; you could call the hospital appointment booking department.  It’s good you have your family routing for you. I hope you hear soon.x

  • Hi everyone

Hope it's ok to post here- just looking for some advice/support.
I'm 25 and noticed blood on my stool a few weeks ago. Have also been having softer stool and bowel habits have changed (in a vague way). I went to see the GP and he done a rectal exam (no haemorrhoids) and an abdo exam (couldn't feel anything). He sent 3 stool packs and my FIT test has come back abnormal. Other was normal and still waiting for calprotectin.

I am worried out of my mind, can't focus and it's all I think about. I've completely prepared myself for worst case scenario. Just wondering if people have experienced similar and it's not turned out to be cancer?
    Thank you x

  • Ab0403.  I'm no expert here but what level has your FIT test results come back at ?   I'm sure there are others on here with really good advice for you. I have read that 96% of people that have an abnormal FIT test don't have cancer. So best not too worry at this stage

I have just had my results back today as have suffered with bloating for years and had groin pain recently. My test results came back at 13 and they are suggesting a colonoscopy but only after a 2nd FIT test.  Has anyone on here had a second test and it been different to the first ?

my FIT score was  a 13 score relatively low I believe ? as I can't see anywhere what the ranges are

  • Thanks so much for your reply and I hope your FIT test/colonoscopy come back fine.
This is the thing, the receptionist at my GP surgery basically told me there was a note next to my test to call me to discuss but I'm not able to speak to my gp for another week!! So just hanging in limbo. I'm still waiting for calprotectin and getting bloods done today. The not knowing is so scary isn't it.
    Hope you get sorted x

  • Hi all,

reading this thread has really helped me tonight as I've been to the doctors today and I'm feeling really stressed.

I am a mum of two and I started getting bright red blood on my stools before I was pregnant with my second child. I would use anusol cream and this would settle it and it would happen on and off. Fast forward to over a year later and I seem to have blood in every stool. I have had one episode of the bowl being bright red about 2 months ago but nothing like that since. I tend to go every morning and I haven't seen a regular change in my bowels in that some days are softer than others but it's not a constant issue. Never had a dark stool just bright red blood.

So I went to my GP and she asked me to do a stool test which hasn't come back yet but my inflammatory ESR marker is slightly raised and she has referred me for a colonoscopy. Has anyone ever had the same?

i don't have any significant tummy pain besides a few cramps that last a few seconds every now and again and Ofc some wind

To say I'm petrified is an understatement. I'm so so so worried and my family are trying to keep me calm but it's so hard especially because of my kids

    fingers crossed it's nothing
