Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Hi Kod, my partner is 54 and had a FiT test that came back very low positive it was 10. He was given a 2 week urgent referral by his GP for an endoscopy as he has a family history of colorectal cancer.  He was sick with worry and anxiety which is completely natural. He had his endoscopy yesterday and he is fine. Completely clear but a small haemmoroid.

He was beside himself with worry and always worries about his health but it is all fine.  Most people referred are absolutely fine. Of course you are worried. There were quite a few people there yesterday and someone having your procedure which was very quick. All fine. Apparently lots of people have polyps which are completely benign and they were removing them yesterday.  Anyway polyps are very slow growing too. We watched box sets of Poirot to try to keep our minds off it. You will be fine.  Let me know how it goes or message me before if you need any reassurance xx

  • Thank u for your kind words I had a FIT and iit was less than 6 but due to my health anxiety the Consultant is doing a flexi  sigmoidoscopy he said I had anal fissure but I have this niggle feeling there is something sinister

  • Oh my goodness a reading of 6! That is negative. You sound just like my partner with your niggly feeling! I understand completely. Even though everything is.highly likely going to be absolutely fine you have got it in your head that something is wrong and that thought is getting bigger and bigger and overriding all the positive and rational thoughts. You will be fine. My partner is always asking me if he looks ill and whether this or that is something sinister.  He was ok and you will be ok. You will either have a small cut, a haemmoroid a harmless polyp or absolutely nothing. Send me a message anytime and I will reply.

  • Thank u for ur kind words I did get it checked and the consultant said it was a anal fissure but due to my health anxiety I feel it is mor sinister so my consultant said for reassurance he will do a flexi sigmoidoscopy. I do suffer severe health anxiety and hoping to get some talking therapy. I always feel the medics are missing something. I to am 54 years old and going through menopause

  • After you have the procedure on Friday you will be ok. Then think about maybe talking to someone about your anxiety. There are lots of relaxation techniques. We.all get stressed.its normal to be anxious. The waiting is the worst. Please let me know how you get on xx

  • Thank u and I will let u know

  • Hi just checking you are ok. I think the procedure is tomorrow so best of luck. I'll be thinking of you xx
