Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • The fit test I did was from 10ug so anything more than that is abnormal, so mine being more than 200ug has scared me to my core. I do really hope a hemorrhoid is causing this fit test to be this high. While I saw blood in the stool I was taking blood from I took it from a part there was no blood so was quite shocked with results.

Awww thank you hun, for your kind words. Yes I’m due end of December so I have another two months to go. I feel so overwhelmed, I have pregnancy to think about aswell as Covid and now this. It just doesn’t seem to be getting better. :(

  • Yes I totally understand I'm here if you need a chat anytime x

  • Thank you so much, I’ll keep you updated x

  • Hope you don't mind me joining. Reading through your posts this morning has been really helpful.

I'm 36 and have noticed blood in my poo every now and again for a while (I actually don't know how long for). I just assumed it was due to constipation. I would see it, then it would go then come and go again.

I spoke to my GP for another issue and mentioned it. She saw me on Thursday and she's sent off a sample for a FIT test and calproctein test. There was blood was present on the surface of one piece (I'm quite constipated), it was bright red, mixed with a little mucus. She examined me and said that I do have hemoroids which could be causing the bleeding but needed to rule out anything sinister as the blood wasn't on the tissue.

I missed a call from the hospital yesterday afternoon and now I'm besides myself with worry. Why would they be calling so soon? Could the results be back already?

I lost my mum to pancreatic cancer 6 years ago and my Dad to lung cancer when I was 12 so I'm thinking the worse.

Now real point to my post, just needed to say it to people to understand what I'm going through.

  • [@mummy's_girl]‍ Hi, try not to worry ok, you said you’re constipated and with constpation it irritates the hemorrhoids and that causes the bleeding. It’s good that you don’t see blood everyday, I see bloody  everyday. When I did the fit test I dipped the stick where there’s no blood and i still got such a high level of blood so I’m completely freaked out. Why did the hospital call you ? Or was it the doctors? I don’t think results come back that quickly so try not to worry. When you did the fit test did you dip

it into where you saw blood?

  • Thanks for your reassuring comments [@Sabr]‍

I'm sorry to read that you are seeing blood every day, I really hope that as soon as baby is born you can have the colonoscopy. You must be going out of you mind with worrying

The call was definitely from the hospital as I called back the number. I'm holding on the hope that they were calling to check my personal details. I would have thought it would be the GP who'd be calling if the results where positive.

I couldn't see any blood in the stool when I dipped. It was only on that one bit. I took it mostly from the bloody stool so it'll probably come back very very high.

  • [@mummy's_girl]‍ It has actually been a a very worrying pregnancy because of this blood, it’s a constant worry. I just wish the blood would just stop.

How are you? Have you heard anything from the doctors?  Did you dip your stick in where you see blood? If so the test detects even the littlest blood so don’t be alarmed when you get the results ok.

  • Hey [@Sabr]‍,

Yes, I got my results back yesterday. Calproctectin test was normal, FIT test abnormal (as expected). I have been referred for a colonoscopy. Had my call with the nurse specialist this afternoon, she said my results were about 200 so quite high.

I'm trying not to get myself in a state again. The GP said that 90% of abnormal fit tests are nothing to worry about.

Literally, mid way writing this I've just received a call from the hospital and they've booked me in for a colonoscopy this Sunday 8th Nov. I'm greatful that it's happened so fast but even more worried now.

  • [@mummy's_girl]‍ you are very fortunate to get an appointment so quick! So very happy for you. Try not to worry as hard as it is. I’m hoping it’s just hemorrhoids for you! Do keep me updated ! Wishing you just positive vibes !

  •  [@Sabre]‍ Ahh thank you so much.... I'll let you know how I get on.
