Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Hey [@Primeexample]‍ I got a calproctein test done that was not raised. But I did another fit test and the blood level was again over 200ugh I am so totally panicked and I can’t even do anything about it but cry.

  • Hi [@Sabr]‍

Please give this a proper read:

    www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/.../

There's 97% chance you don't have significant polyps or  bowel cancer with low calprotectin according to this study!

  • Ok I understand, but a positive fit test over 200 can not be good. I just can shake this feeling and I just don’t know what to do with myself anymore.

  • [@Tamkks]‍ hey when you did your fit test did you dip the stick into visable blood?

  • Hi mate mines was 142 I have a cut it picked it up they done my colonoscopy on Friday 23in Scotland U.K. and everything was clear people need to realise also it's all purpose what I was told on this also was that the test is there to find blood it doesn't detect cancer only blood I got my results Monday 19th and I couldn't sit and wait on colonoscopy so I went to hospital saying I was in pain down my side and obviously telling them about my fit test etc I got ct scan that night and I pestered the colonoscopy dept for appointment they said it's a stage process that I need to be tested for covid etc then when results are back they will then schedule appointment but on the Monday I got tested in the hospital due to being put into a ward from a&e surgical ward so got out on Monday night c scan was clear and I said well when I phoned colonoscopy I've been tested and it's negative could I not isolate and you chase my appointment she said ok get someone to come for your bowel prep Thursday and you come for scope on Friday at 1 o'clock all the above what I'm trying to say is I totally understand the wait and feeling of everything falling apart infront of you and nerves etc just push them constantly your health not there's and I'm extremely thankful for this site to sit and listen to people who are going through same situation oh and ps the doctors and the scopist think the tests are useless and not documented correctly ie they only tell you the cancer word but don't let people know the other things what can cause the positive tests what causes panic as I know when I got it I thought straight away cancer

  • It is the one you put into the stool then send away

  • Hey [@Tamkks]‍ Thank you for replying back to me. I’m in a bit of a muddle as I’m pregnant so they won’t do any sort of test on me right now so I just have to live with this fear and anxiety. :(

can I ask when did the fit test could you see visible blood in your stool?

  • I have visible blood yes when I done the test I didn't have visible blood it was more harder stool no signs of blood x

  • I didn’t see any visable blood when I did mine either so shocked and worried that the score was more than 200ug.

  • They said above 100 to 200 is elevated that's from numerous doctors aswell as the one who done my scope one doctor junior said no no this picks up only a certain type of blood from high up in the bowel then I said that to the stomach doctor and no disrespect to the junior what made me worry about what he said the head one said that  nonsense  it's not that clever it's whole purpose is to detect blood that's all my stool what I tested it on was more of a black colour I hope you get your answers this must be so much on you when being pregnant x also the doctor said if you have a curry or anything spicy your bowel releases a protein as you are really irritating your bowel with the spice they said this protein can be detected as blood also there isn't much answers for the people waiting on the colonoscopy it's always negative stuff please keep in touch how's the pregnancy going isn't it December time you are due x
