Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Hi [@Primeexample]‍

My polyp was 100mm but was not detected on my CT scan.

initially it was reported to be half the size it actually was. I too had back pain and lower abdominal pain but I think the back pain, which intensified as time went on, was due to the way I was sat at my desk at work; I just couldn’t get comfy due to stomach bloating and pain and looking back sat in all sorts of weird positions which were definitely not good for my back in order to get through the day at my desk.

My polyp was removed and I’m immensely grafetful as it was removed during the scare about certain groups of ppl who were at high risk and I can’t thank the team who must have been scared to work during such a risky time. But despite all these tests I still come to the conclusion that it’s still difficult for certain illnesses to be confirmed. Sometimes I think is sheer luck that they come across the cause during iliminaton testing.

Are you having a colonoscopy after the scan? I don’t know what kind of scan I had btw, I did have the dye in my arm and it lasted about 10 mins in a polo type machine. Completely painful, just a weird sensation with the dye which I was told to expect and was normal.

Good luck let us know how it goes.

  • Hi [@Sabr]

Yup, your GP should be able to do it- it's called calprotectin, really good, bowel specific inflammation marker, usually used to detect IBD but is also raised in almost 98% of bowel cancer cases. Obviously that's not as good as colonoscopy but slightly re-assuring!

I am currently just referred for the CT vitrtual colonoscopy, which according to my consulatant is better as they can see the whole of the abdominal area and for colon itself it's almost as sensitive as normal colonoscopy. The problm is - if they find something I will still have to do the regular one, but at this point I'm just happy that SOMETHING is being done.

[@Kadash]‍ I can't believe they missed your polyp in the CT scan, considering how large it was! Did you do the prep with Gastrofin/laxative and had the air pumped into your colon before the test?  Well done on pushing to get it properly checked out and getting to the bottom of the problem. Must be such a relief! Did they advise how often you need to repeat colonoscopies form now on?

I don't think they are planning to refer me for a regular colonoscopy, unless something is found.

The CT is booked for 10am on Friday, I am very stressed but realise there is othing else I can do at this point. I've got this overweheling sense of dread that is slowly driving me insane. The waitng for the call with results will be fun! Wish me luck- I will report back with the outcome :)

  • [@Primeexample]‍ I’m scared the calapracton test is just gonna make me worry more. Sick and tired of seeing blood everyday, i don’t know how my birth will go or how long it will take me to recover, it all depends on that befor they decide to arrange a colonoscopy.

  • [@Sabr]‍ you might be right.. I suppose it's just better to wait, but i do know it's easier said than done!

I had the scan on Friday morning (not the nicest thing to go through) and now waiting for results- having a mini heart attack every time my phone rings. I was told I will know within 14 days (like, really?), but if it's something more serious it will be very quick. At least with colonoscopy you know right away!

  • How come they didn’t offer you a colonoscopy? I’m wondering if I should go for the virtual colonoscopy after the baby is born, that way I don’t need to wait months just to heal.

What are your symptoms hun? Usually they direct you to the colonoscopy route as that’s the most accurate. Anyway don’t be scared, praying that it’s nothing for you. Keep us updated.

  • Hi [@Sabr]‍

Hope you're doing well (under the circumstances!) and thank you for your kind words :)

I had my CT colonoscopy results and they are all clear so I have been officially discharged!

I think they went with the CT as it shows the inside of the colon as well as the main organs (they also covered lungs) and as my main symptoms were dull pain in upper abdominal area plus back pain, it kind of made sense. The CT I had does detect polyps and any other issues       (diverticular disease, hemorrhoids, etc )and obviously cancer, so it's definitely worth having as it's far less invasive but you do have to wait for the results which is hell and the radiation dose is pretty substantial.

I think it's a good idea to suggest it to your consulatant, but bearing i mind that it's still a little invasive as the pump 40L of air in your colon- not fun, AND if they do detect anything you have to go for a regular colonoscopy anyway. On the other hand you can possibly have some reassurance sooner. It's such a mindfield! I am overall happy I had gone down this route, but considering my symptoms and a very low FIT score, I might be an anomaly! I am planning to gift myself a regular colono anyway for my 40th in 2 years (haha, best gift ever). I have some history of colon cancer in my family so have to stay on top of things.

I really hope you get some answers sooner rather than later....Sending hugs!

  • Hi hope everyone is ok I was complaining of right side fullness feeling to doctor aswell as going to toilet and having blood only way to describe it is when I strain blood is there so doctor done examination from behind she said she found a Hemorrhoid so gave me suppositorys week went by and still blood not everyday just when I need to strain so she fitted me in for stool test qfit what came back elevated at 142 so anyways fast forward from 1 week ago to Monday there my pain was getting worsening on right side what was usually feeling of trapped gas feeling to a stabbing feeling went to Aemergency they done bloods my white blood cells were slightly raised so they sent me for ct scan and all was normal as they thought it was grumbling appendix so ct scan clear they said to repeat bloods again yesterday and bloods were all back to normal waiting on colonoscopy can qfit detect Hemorrhoids blood or is it only cancerous blood xxx

  • [@Tamkks]‍ a fit test can not tell the difference between what type of blood so it would be positive for hemorrhoids and fissure blood. Did you get a Calprotectin test done ?

  • Yeah the test I had was a qfit test supposed to detect a certain type of blood from the colon mines was elevated I got colonoscopy today and they gave me the all clear

  • And how have you been any update on yourself mate x
