Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Hey [@Kadash]‍ Thank you for saying I’m young too although I know this illness does not look at young or old  and my age people are actually getting it, I’ve even read stories of some patients that had it at 30 or even younger, so terrified. My symptoms are just so weird it’s just this mucas dark blood or a patch of my stool is dark red! Driving me insane. They can’t do it in December as I have no idea how well I’ll be then as baby is due end of December so I’m guessing they want to give me healing time.

Have you gone back to work? If work is giving you this much stress I don’t really think it’s good for you to work there kadash, it’s not good for your mental or physical health. Are generally feeling better after that polyp has been taken out? No more blood or loose stools? Oh a re check colonoscopy? That is differently good to have ! I hope everything is fine, stay positive.

  • Hi [@Sabr]‍

I wish I had a magic wand and could make it February for you Hun. I can’t even imagine how you must be feeling. Maybe when you’ve had baby they may decide if you’re healing well to test you a  little sooner. I know this effects both young and old but I meant that statistically if you are younger the odds are better. Work is what it is. I need to pay my mortgage and such. I’m just keeping positive. Are you working hun? keep safex

  • Hey [@Kadash]‍ still bleeding everyday, but they won’t do anything about it till I’ve given birth. Just praying now really not much I can do. I hope you’re doing well and back to your healthy self?

  • I have CT colongraphy scan on Sunday but i'm scared to do because i have drink Gastrografin. I had bowel habit change for two months going to toilet three times a day thin stool. I always feel like i need to go toilet but I dont.  Then i started to see liquid of blood from my stool. The stool is separate followed by liquid of blood even after poop finish i see blood dont dripping. Dr thought is hommoroid gave me on ointment after week then call to say the blood still there i did fit test came positive on third week blood stopped. two week referral consultant want to do  colonoscopy and i refused. I have requested CT colongraphy now i have a booking for Sunday and i'm still scared want to cancel. I prefer ultrasound.

  • [@zakayo]‍ wishing you luck and it’s notning serious. I can’t even get tested. :( found out I’m anemic but can’t be sure if that’s due to pregnancy or blood in stool. Worried sick.

  • My sister is always anemic during pregnancy and she have to drink iron that she buy from holland barret  www.hollandandbarrett.com/.../spatone-apple-liquid-iron-supplement-60007026  also Dr prescribe her on tablet form. I have asked them to pospone CT scan. I tried to call hospital consultant to ask him if i can first do ultrasound but no answer. My blood is like  liquid coming in drop it isnt mixed with stool. i have lose stool.  Is your fit test positive?

  • Yes I will have to take iron tablets. I also had a positive fit test. So I’m extra worried.

If the blood you see is bright red and not mixed with stool it’s most likely hemorrhoids or fissure try not to stres.

  • Hi [@Sabr]‍ how are you Hun. I know you are still waiting hun but it won’t be to long now. Have you sorted your iron tablets out. Has the doctor done any blood tests in relation to your high fit test. if he hasn’t, I was thinking maybe you could ask him to. They can test for certain indicators that can tell if certain organs are functioning properly etc. It might help give some reassurance.x

    hi [@zakayo]‍

How did your CT colonoscopy go. Do you have the results yet.

  • Hiya

Thought I'd share my experiences here as it seems to be the best thread for this fit/blood in stool nonsense that suddenly turned my life upside down.

So long story short, I'm yet another person on here with raised FIT result (score 30, so not too much but still raised). I have had a weird mid back pain for 5 months now (Had MRIs of both thoracic and lumbar spine, various tests all clear, apparently muscular). But more recently it started radiating more to the front upper abdominal area which freaked me out so I visited me GP yet again. Considering my history of IBS symptoms (cramps, diarrhea, and most recently slight constipation) and family history of GI cancer we did the h.pylori (neg) calprotectin (neg)and the stupid FIT test (pos).

I was super sure all is going to be ok but suddenly i get this urgent 'cancer referral' with all sorts of scary things written on my patient access portal. My anxiety went through the roof and the GP didn't even bother to call me until the day after.

I tried to calm myself done through tons of research (neg calprotectin had negative predictive value for colon cancer >98%)- if you're are still waiting for tests [@Sabr]‍  it could be something to consider for some peace of mind!

Anyhoo, I completely ignored the advice to wait for the call and rang the hospital, booked myself in fit the chat with the consultant, who wasn't very useful and insisted on CT colonoscopy as she wants to see the whole abdominal area. It's happening this Friday morning. I am so so so nervous. Literally haven't done anything productive since this bloody (ha) test result a week abd a half ago. And now through reading this thread I discovered CT won't detect polyps? What's the point?

Ugh. How everyone is doing ok.. Sending positive vibes your way!

  • Hi [@Kadash]‍ they have given me iron tablets for my anemia. They won’t do anything till baby is born. I totally understand that there is a risk but hate that I have to be continually anxious.

[@Primeexample]‍ interesting, what is this test called and do they do it in the UK? If your one came us 98% negative I think that’s a really good thing. Have they given you a date for colonoscopy? I just know my one is gonna delay more, even after I give birth cause I need to heal after birth to get a colonoscopy.
