Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Hi Claire

That's great that your results came back normal - I wanted to ask from one of your previous posts you mentioned cancer pathways letter is that something to worry about if you get one in the post or is it procedure?

    Hem

  • Hi Sabr hun

How are you doing. Have you heard anything back from the hospital yet. These FIT tests are quite a shock when you have a high count result, but sometimes it’s high from things like internal piles and such. Let me know how you are and stay safe.xx

  • [@Kadash]‍ Hi, hope you are well!

I’m not doing so great, my fit test results were 200ug and anything more than 10ug on a fit test shows blood. So major scared and have so much anxiety. They don’t want to do a camera till after I give birth I’m just so worried. I’m constantly thinking about it.

  • Hi Sabr Hun. My fit was 200 too. You’re very young and although it’s doesn’t guarantee anything it is a big plus in your favour. Mine turned out to be a benign (so far) polyp but when I was googling all the time there were other ppl with a similar reading who had piles and irritable bowel...so try not to worry...I know that’s easier said than done. How far along are you now hun. Could they do a scan like the ones they give mums at maternity clinic when they look at baby. It could be a polyp and most are benign. Lots of ppl have them and don’t know but if your colon is sensitive they can cause you symptoms. I look as though I’m never ruffled and stay outwardly calm but I know the downside is my tummy and digestive system takes all the flack instead. Do you think you are the same as me. What are your symtoms now. Please try not to worry. Please try to think positive thoughts and push the negative ones out but also ask if there’s another pregnancy friendly test you could have in the meantime. Sending a massive hug.xx

  • Hey [@Kadash]‍ I’m worried all the stress I’m going through is gonna affect my baby:(. My symptoms at the moment is just blood in the poo. Like I went to the loo today, all parts of my stool looked normal apart from one part of my stool that was bloody and mixed with my stood with maroon blood. I feel like I have a panic attack whenever I think about it. They say they can’t do anything till I give birth, but I will call them again I’m so worried.

  • I know how you feel. I had those panic attack’s too. I couldn’t breathe. My friend told me to do some breathing techniques her counsellor had taught her and it did help me because if you leave those panic attacks to themselves they get really worse. I was like a demented women when I was having one. Inconsolable. The maroon blood could be anal fissures. My friend had those and she had blood every single time she pooped. It might explain why it’s when you poop. I know you’re also worried about what effect this will have on your baby but your pregnancy is going fine...and it’s not your fault you’re stressed, you can’t control this so it’s not your fault...and I’m sure it won’t have any effect on baby, there’s lots of parents who are having babies that have stress and baby is healthy and happy...and when baby comes along and you are sorted you’ll have lots of happy times. Let me know Hun how you are going and you can always pm me and call me if you need.xx

  • Trying not to stress for the baby’s sake [@Kadash]‍ this other lady on another forum said her stool has maroon blood like mine and it was something sinister and scared the life out of me. The only thing is I don’t need to go to the poo regularly.

Thank you hun for being there for me, it honestly is such a hard time. I’m so so glad yours turned out to benign even with all those symptoms. Has your poo gone back to normal now ? Did you ever get maroon blood ?

  • Hi Hun@sabr

Im so glad if it’s helping to chat hun. I found it a godsend to have someone who knew what I was going through. Anyway, don’t you  listen to those negative things Hun. My dad always says to me ppl only remember you for the bad things you do, not the good because good isn't as interesting to chat about (I ought to add here that my dad told me to always remember this and try to always do good)  and the same happens with loads of things in life; car crashes, illnesses etc. We only tend to talk about the bad crashes or illnesses but honestly Hun, there are millions of happy endings. Ppl have car crashes and walk away without a mark and ppl have health issues and walk away fully healthy it’s just ppl never get to hear those stories because they’re not considered unusual or gory and dramatic.

I don’t know what maroon blood is. Is that a bright red blood or a dark blood. How long have you had blood in your poops. I had blood, it was all around and inside my poops. I went to A&E on a couple of occasions but they weren’t really worried. They gave me morphine because I was in pain and they put me on a drip for fluid and vitamins I think and then discharged me later the same day. ( I also had lots of pain in my lower stomach)

I did notice that certain foods made it worse for me like onion and spicy hot foods so I cut them out altogether. I kept getting told tomatoes were bad too because our digestive system isn’t able to break the skin down so I cut them out of my diet too and even now only eat them skinned. It may be that your bowel is getting Irritated with certain foods and stress and if you have fissures or piles (all of which are treatable) they are getting irritated when the food is on its way down through your digestive system. When I was under stress and being bullied at work I would poop within 10 mins of entering work. My tummy was tied up in knots. Your mind can effect your tummy subconsciously I believe and you’re understanderbly carrying a lot of emmotion, being pregnant as well as this worry, but you’re doing just fine hun.x. You could have something like me which could be a polyp which can get irritated when food passes by it and causes it to bleed.  But remember virtually  all polyps are benign. I’m sure everything is going to be fine hun.

How far are you on in your pregnancy now hun?xx

  • Hi [@Kadash]‍ thank you for you kind words at a time I’m driving myself insane with worry.

The blood is a dark maroonish blood kind of mixed with mucas at times on parts of my stool. I really do hope it is nothing but a harmless polyp and nothing more. I was hoping hemorrhoids but due to the colour of the blood I highly doubt it. I’m super worried.

Hey I have friend requested you.

  • Hi Hun. @sabr  ...I’ve had to google maroon blood because I don’t know what the colour maroon is and It’s brought up very red as in strawberry red to very deep red as in beetroot and I’d say I had a mixture of both. I had mucus too. Try and remember tho hun that there are millions of ppl walking around with polyps, fissures and piles up there butt, honestly, but they never trouble them or harm them and if they do cause any discomfort they’re removed just as a precaution, that’s all. Please try to keep that in your mind. It won’t hurt to press the GP for any other non invasive tests that may be available too especially now that some hospital services are being resumed. You must be at least half way through your pregnancy now? how exciting; I so wish I could take your anxiety away and you could relax and enjoy this beautiful moment of pregnancy without any more worries, I know its hard, I really do. Anyway...I’m sending another massive virtual hug to you hun.xx
