Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • It took me about 3 visits to my GP over a period of almost three years of being told I have IBS. If I could go back in time I would have pushed for the test as now I am facing a major procedure which if I’d had this done sooner may not have been necessary. My advice.......PUSH, PUSH AND PUSH until you get one.

Good luck and don’t be put off.x

ps my GP sorted the test. I had to make an appointment with the surgery nurse in order to collect the test which I had to do at home place in the envelope provided and post in any regular mail box. The GP surgery telephoned me with the result about 2 weeks later.

  • Hi not had results yet, that's 12 days , I feel dreadful tonight but not sure if that's anxiety or not .  Have you had any word about your appts yet? X

  • Hi how you feeling Kadash? My GP gave me the Fit test , I did test then handed it into the path lab at our hospital got results a few days later . X

  • Hi Claire,

Waiting really is just the worst. My anxiety always elevates while waiting. I really do hope everything comes back clear! I've had a letter about a week ago, I rang up the hospital this morning just to follow up about what's going on and I was told there has been a delay in sending out fit tests but I should be receiving one in the post in the next few days and I have been booked in for a colonoscopy but the date is just provisional as they want to do my fit test first xx

  • Hi Claire.

How are you. Have you had any results back yet? I had to chase my results up btw. Neither the hospital or my GP rang me.

My colan biopsies have come back nothing abnormal detected. The blood test for my overies has come back normal too which is all good stuff.

I am still waiting for the polyp to be removed and biopsied but the hospital has told me I could be waiting a long long time so I don’t know if it’s cancerous or not.

Thing is I’ve been off work throughout thIs whole nightmare. Now what? Do I go back to work or stay home sick. Obviously I’m anxious and worried. 3 ppl at work in my office have been confirmed with coronavirus and 2 more are awaiting their results and another colleague (from another office across from mine) has just come out of intensive care. I’m worried I’ll get the covid virus and then they’ll send me an appointment and I won’t be able to go to hospital for my procedure but I can’t stay on the sick forever. I don’t know what to do. It’s a nightmare.

Let me know when you have your results but I would definitely ring the hospital yourself for your results and your surgery too. Also ask your GP to look on the hospital system. That is where mine were but the GP doesn’t get notified that they are back from the labs which is why no one rang me from the surgery with minexx

  • Hi Claire

How are you. Have you had your results. Hope everything is good.xx

    hi

[@Kitkit22]‍ have you managed to get an appointment for a colonoscopy yet Hun.

    [@Sabr]‍  I hope you’re enjoying your pregnancy.

[@Cazsur]‍ did your doctor give you the FIT test?

    xx

  • Hi Kadash,

I'm still waiting on an appointment, I did ring up last week and was told I should get a fit test through the post and then I will have a date for the colonoscopy. I still haven't received the fit test yet. This wait is making me go mental honestly!! Can't do anything with my day because the fear is always on my mind. How are you getting along? When is your surgery? Xx

  • Hi....Don’t worry it’s quite normal my head is just the same as yours. I seriously have even developed a stutter when I talk about it. My friend chases everything up for me btw and I would do that if I were you because they keep opening and closing the gate of opportunity for endoscopies and you have to get it when you can. Are you still going in to work.

Ive now been told my polyp is classed as a grade 4 complicated polyp and I’ve  been told the specialist surgeon isn’t available to remove it (No fault of their own). They are trying to get me into another hospital. When it’s out and biopsied I will feel a lot better I hope.(touch wood)

It’s  the window of opportunity that I worry about. They will only do these procedures if you’ve been self isolating for at least two weeks and I’ve found that you can get a call only a day or two beforehand. The thing  is one minute they are doing the procedure and then the procedures are halted due to health and safety and then they are back on and so forth.  I’ve spoken to work but my boss has said when I feel better I can’t work from home which I need so that I can self isolate until I get a date. If I return to work I would have to decline a last minute or cancellation slot. At the moment I’m trying to sort my BM out so I’m not sat on a toilet all day and my stomach has bad days in-terms of pain and upset and then better days. Like you, I’m stressed to the armpits. Chase your test up hun.xx

  • Thanks so much for asking . After 17 days of hell I got letter today to say that ct did not show any suspicious lesions and that it was reassuring but they will see me in clinic as the don't need to do anything urgently . Was a bit confused about what they meant by that but think it sounds like good news for me.  I have had cancer previous do

the fact they do not see anything sinister is just so reassuring for me .  What does grade 4 mean? I suspect I have polyps , what did your ct report say ? Xx

  • Brilliant, that’s fantastic newsI’m so pleased for you. (Virtual hug). I bet they want you in clinic to discuss if any of your symtoms have changed and what other investigations they might do. They did that with me and didn’t see me for a week or so to give me time to relax and see what symtoms got better because anxiety can make some symtoms worsen. You’ve had several tests now and everything is good.  I bet they are being extra vigilant too given that you’ve had cancer before.

My CT scan showed nothing but CT scans don't pick up polyps. The polyps are graded by size and difficulty in removal 1-4(4 being the highest). To be honest it really scares me senseless now that I know what grade it is just because I’m scared of the removal procedure. Once removed it has to be biopsied but I’m just taking one step at a time. I could panic and have a complete meltdown but I’m trying to keep it together...and work doesn’t help.

This is so frightening for us all but messaging each other really helps me...just to know i’m not alone.xx
