Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Hi Claire

Hopefully your results won’t be to long now and will be all positive stuff.

The polyp is a tubular villus adenoma. It is made of of cells that are non cancerous and those that can be or become cancerous. What’s worrying me is that they have taken some biopsy’s of the colan but it will be 4 weeks before I have a result back from them so that will be almost 5 weeks in total! It’s crazy!

Im so completely thankful it’s nothing worse.  But I would just feel better with the sample results showing benign. It’s  not that I don’t think they know what they are doing, but they don’t know what is in, under or behind the polyp.

I still have tummy pain constantly. And my tongue is a greeny yellow despite having brilliant oral hygiene and despite cleaning my tongue every morning.

I feel I need to be back at work too but I still have tummy pain. and questions unanswered. Ive been told that this polyp won’t give me pain although ive spoken to anothermedic who says the ones considered large (over an inch) do give you pain. My poos are still raggedy and I’m going about 12 times a day. I don’t know if that may settle down to about 8 again and is because of the endoscopy.

Ive never had blood in my poo btw. I had a very high FIT test result and diarrhoea for 2.5 yrs which turned into loose raggedy yellow stools and eventually severe abdominal pains that took my breath away.

I still have the raw tummy in my stomach area and my gp won’t send me for the camera down my throat. Instead he has put me on antiacid tablets which I assume is causing the lower stomach cramps and making me feel sick. He says it may be stress causing IBS and acid hence the medication. Granted I’ve had stress at work but that didn’t dominate my life and my home life is a relative breeze to most ppls so I don’t go with that. The gps have all said it was irritable bowel syndrome on every visit over 3 yrs but I don’t go with that. I’ve had antiacid tablets b4 and they did nothing other than made me feel sick and tummy cramps.  Ive been told by another’s Gp it could be a bug in my stomach which can live there for 10yrs. But at the moment the nhs aren’t doing poo tests because of coronavirus so I have to take the antiacid for now againxx

  • Hi Kadash,

Your symptoms sound similar to mine. I thought I noticed blood in my poo once but looking back at it I don't believe it was blood. My poos are very yellow and loose, and recently been having quite watery diarrhea as docs have put me on laxido for suspected faecal impaction.

I'm still waiting for a call from a doctor regarding setting up an appointment for a colonoscopy and a fit test, I had received a letter saying I will receive a call but not happened yet. Recently I've started feeling very nauseous, been sick almost every day this week and have real bad tummy cramps. Also I'm so fatigued to the point I will sleep almost all day and all night. I really want to say it's all in my head but it's so hard to not assume the worst until I get a diagnosis. Every doctor I have seen strongly believe it is not cancer as I'm only 22, but I had read a lot about cases of bowel cancer occuring in people in their 20s.

I'm trying to think positively but as I said it's so hard to when you just don't know what's wrong with you. My body is definitely trying to tell me something isn't right, whether it's just a bad case of IBS or something else.

  • Hi Claire,

Have you received the results of your CT scan yet? Hope everything is well!

  • Hello I hope you don't mind me asking but how did you manage to get a fit test. My doctor told me that I have to be 50 or over. I've been suffering badly for a long time. Hope you are OK
  • Hey [@Kadash]‍  so glad it was just a polyp, try not to worry as they have said it’s nothing worrisome put it to the back of your mind.

I’m scared I won’t be getting a colonoscopy anytime soon due to my pregnancy. I’m starting to get sciatica which I know it’s not due to the pregnancy cause I’m still really early could it be something more serious digging into my sciatic nerve ?

  • Hi Cazsur,

You definitely don't have to be over 50 to get a fit test. My doc referred me for more tests via the urgent 2ww and I will be doing a fit test and having a colonoscopy and I am only 22.

I'd say just stress your worries to your doctor, let them know that your symptoms are not normal for you and push them to give you a referrel, they should be able to do it.

    Best of luck,

    Kit xx

  • Hi kit do I need a referral then before I can get the fit test. Have you had yours yet

  • Hi Cazsur,

In my experience I had to get a referral before having a fit test, but I do believe a lot of people have them without the referral. In my personal experience I had to get a referral for it. I haven't had mine yet no, I'm still waiting for a call to arrange appointments.

  • Hi kitkik do you mind telling me your symptoms. Have you lost any weight or have blood

  • Hiya,

Just basically change in bowel habits for about 8 weeks straight. Recently been feeling a constant need to use the toilet but nothing comes out. Every time I do have a bowel movement I feel as if I've not fully emptied my bowels. I think I had blood once, not very sure if it was blood. Noticed no weight loss though.
