Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Hi Kit

I’d say deffinately push for the colonoscopy. As I understand it the colonoscopy is the gold standard. The CT scan is an alternative option but does not pick up things that the colonoscopy can pick up for example polyps which can be removed at the time of the colonoscopy. They may do the CT scan and then the colonoscopy. I was given the CT scan because I couldn’t get the colonoscopy but now I’m having the colonoscopy. They are starting to do the colonoscopies now so you may get offered one today fingers crossed.

let me know how you go on.xx

  • Hi Sabr....what absolutely wonderful news. (Congratulatory virtual hug to you). I couldn’t think of anything nicer than finding out you are pregnant. Congratulations!! How lovely for you.

....but don’t forget to look after yourself too Hun. Enjoy your pregnancy as you should but please, please, please ask if there is an alternative safe test that you can have to investigate the symtoms that you have been experiencing. Its so easy with motherhood to forget ourselves. There’s nothing  more precious than a pregnancy and baby, but please hun, baby needs healthy mummy too so don’t forget yourself.

Anyway, its all baby grows and nappy talk for you from now on lol...oh how I wish I was pregnant again.

Stay safe, enjoy your pregnancy and all the best to you.xx

  • [@Kadash]‍ This is my first so I’m super nervous don’t know what’s normal and what’s not lol. Thank you so much for the good wishes! (Virtual hug back to you) !

Have they started doing colonoscopys now? That’s really good! I think when I spoke to the nurse she said I could have the sigmoidoscopy done but it would have to be in my second trimester. It’s all nice being pregnant till you see blood in your stool again :/

  • Hi Kadash,

That is music to my ears to hear they are starting to do colonoscopies! I will definitely push for a colonoscopy in that case. I'm so nervous but I think I'll be soooo relieved after having it done. I just want to know what's wrong with me at this point. My doctor has said she thinks it's most likely Crohn's or Colitis, so I'm hoping it is just that.

When are you getting your colonoscopy? Let me know how it goes, I hope it'll be good news, good luck and keep me updated! Xx

  • Hi everyone. I was advised 4 weeks ago , following a positive FIT test that I needed an urgent colonoscopy. This has been the most anxious 4 weeks ever!! However I got a call from hospital yesterday to say I will be contacted again within a fortnight advising me where to go for Covid19 test and then where and when my colonoscopy appt is. I'm in Scotland so I guess all regions will be different . But so thankful that things are starting to get running again.

Hi Everyone (I don’t know how to paste everyone’s name into this...sorry)

    hope you’re all keeping safe.

I’ve had my colonoscopy. I have a polyp 5cm long and growing outward by half of the diameter of the colon. They feel very sure it’s not cancer. They have taken biopsies of the bowel. Apparently I need a open surgery operation to remove it or a colonoscopy operation. Both have risks ie tearing the bowel and I may need a temporary bag which doesn’t bother me if I am healthy.   today they were going to tell me which way they were going to remove it but they have now decided I need to wait a further 3 weeks for an appointment to discuss it and then another wait for the procedure. I asked about the biopsies and have been told not to worry about the biopsies as they are not urgent and will take about 3 weeks which concerns me. I feel it’s very good news but I spoke to a cancer nurse who told me they can tell if it’s cancer usually from the look but can’t tell if there are cancerous cells without the biopsy. It’s all wait and I won’t feel 100% without the biopsy results.

[@Claireg73]‍  hope you’ve had good news Claire.

Glasgirl, hello to you. As you’ve probably read in our posts it’s definitely a worrying waiting game. Hope you hear something soon.

    Xx

  • Hi Kadash,

That's great news that it was just a polyp and I really hope that it's not cancerous! It's good news that they feel it is not cancer. Of course it's going to be so worrying waiting for the appointment but as long as it's not cancer it's all good. What were your symptoms initially and how old are you, if you don't mind me asking?

I will be having a fit test which I'm expecting in the post, and once the results come back they will decide whether I need a colonoscopy based on the outcome of the fit test. My anxiety has fully sky rocketed and I have really hit rock bottom in life right now. I feel absolutely awful and I'm so so scared. Ive more recently been feeling a lot of pressure in my rectum as if I need to use the toilet but I can't seem to have a bowel movement when I try. I hope everything is okay, I'm just so glad they're doing tests and not brushing anything off just because I'm young. Xx

  • That is great news , I'm sure they would be able to tell if it was sinister . You must feel relived ? Was this causing you bleeding and loose stools ? How did you manage to get one , I thought they were not doing any at moment .  Had CT on Friday , not heard anything yet ?
thanks for thinking of me xx

  • Hi Claire,

They have started doing colonoscopies now thankfully. I also have an appointment for a colonoscopy. Once you get your CT results, maybe ask if you can also have a colonoscopy so you are able to have a thorough examination.

I hope your CT results come back normal xx

  • Aw that is great , so glad things are moving in right direction .  Fingers crossed my ct scan is clear . Thank you so much x
