Positive FIT test has led to an urgent referral. Terrified

I am 32 and have suffered from IBS for a number of years. In the last year, since having my daughter, my symptoms have become much worse. I had blood tests last month and did the FIT test. On Friday the GP rang me as my test had come back with an abnormal result. He said they needed to make an urgent referral for a colonoscopy as they were looking for more sinister causes for the blood such as cancer. I'm so worried that I have bowel cancer. I have had a change in bowel habits in the last month and I've googled too much and scared myself. My family are very positive and are trying to make me think positively but I am just so scared.

  • Hi Nat

very glad to hear that you have had a good result from your CT scan and I hope you feel more relaxed now you have a good result. My ct scan definitely helped me and my symtoms seemed to lessen for a while.

Like you, I wonder where the blood in my poo has come from...so I’m hoping the colonoscopy won’t be to far away for us all.x

  • Hi

thanks for your reply .  Ferritin is your iron stores so although I'm not anemic my iron stores are very low which can indicate bleeding , also had positive fit test .  Been feeling not right since Xmas had neurological symptoms , twitching , sensory weird stuff going on and at same time bowel movements changed from only going to toilet once a week to going every day , not diaorrah but looser movements .  Feel really tired , just not myself , don't have many stomach pain but can get little twinges and my stomach is noisy and can have gas .
I had melanoma luckily it was caught early .   I'm waiting for CT but said it could be up to 6 weeks , I need to try snd get it sooner  don't know if I can still get private one or whether to go to A and E .  Just worried about leaving any longer than I have , have been going to my gp since January with this !  I'm so glad your CT was clear , you must feel so relived .  I read yesterday thstbtgey are going to try and get cancer tests back on track this week so hopefully you will get a colonoscopy for piece of mind .  Take care xx

  • Hi Claire

You must be anxious. Waiting 6 weeks for a CT scan for anyone is to long, not because of your symtoms, because as I said I’m not medically trained, but just because we all know our own bodies, and we know when something is different even if sometimes it’s nothing and just an unexplained change in our bodies, but it needs checking quickly all the same.

I hate being a ‘nuisance’ so I rarely go to the GP. I live by myself but have a friend who basically kept telephoning the GP and the hospital all the time chasing up an appointment and I’m convinced that helped. My name is probably mud now but I believe my friends persistence certainly helped get me my appointment. I don’t know if you have a partner, family member or friend that can do that for you but if not you should do it yourself and don’t be put off by anyone who might try to make you feel you should just sit quietly.

Please ring your GP again and insist that you need the scan. I think waiting makes us more uptight and symtoms worse.  Hopefully it will be nothing but at least after a scan you can relax and get on with things.xx

  • Hi

you sound like you are having a rough time , so you experienced  a change in your bowel movements and you are going more often then and has the consistency of them changed ? It is worth asking for ferretin levels to be checked as my bloods looked ok but then when the checked ferritin they found out I was low in iron but not anemic so sometime they don't test the ferritin .
I spent all day yesterday contacting private hospitals re booking a scan and could not get one , was really disheartened then literally as I put phone down the hospital phoned to book me in for Friday .  I'm so scared but it needs to be done as I feel really unwell can't tell if it's anxiety causing some of if of not !!! Fingers crossed it's good news for me . Take care , what's your next step? Are you going to push for colonoscopy when they are doing them again ? X

  • Hi Claire, I’m so glad that you are getting your scan. At least you will know where you stand. Fingers crossed everything will come back good and you don’t have long to wait. Friday will be here before you know it. I’ll be thinking about you Friday. I’m sure everything will be fine. Let me know how you go. Sending a hug for Friday.xx

  • Thank you so much . I pray that it's clear but I'm feeling really worried as don't know how I can feel so not right without something causing it .  Did you have contrast when you had your scan? How long did you wait for results ? Are your symptoms still the same ? Xxx

  • Hi Claire. I had the contrast. The procedure was quite quick and the hospital was very quite and deserted so I felt quite safe. The scan was on the Friday I believe and the results were back by Tuesday I think. They were very quick as I recall. The doctor telephoned me with the results but not all hospital and GP protocol is the same so you may get a telephone call or a request to go back in to the hospital.

I’m sure you will be fine and I’m wishing you excellent results too.xx

  • Hi Sabr....thank you for that lovely message. I’m wondering if you’ve had your ultrasound done. You haven’t posted here for a little while and I’m hoping you’re okay.

Claire is having her CT scan done today so hopefully she will get some good results.

Now it’s my turn to send you a big hug.xx

  • Hi Kadash,

I've been experiencing symptoms of bowel cancer for the past 5 weeks. Diarrhea everyday and more recently having the constant feeling of needing to go to the toilet. I haven't had a fit test but I had a normal stool culture test and blood test which came back normal, but now I wish I had a fit test! I have been referred for an urgent colonoscopy but now reading this thread I see that it is not an available option. I'm supposed to have a telephone consultation with the hospital today so should I ask for a CT scan instead then?

It's wonderful to hear that your CT scan came back normal, I hope you're staying safe also

    Kit xx

  • [@Kadash]‍ I cant get a a ultrasound done as I have just found out I’m expecting so I guess I won’t be seen for another couple of months. I hope you are well!

Claire good luck for today! Hope all goes well.
