Had an Upper endoscopy, now really scared

Hello, I am 34 and have had an upper endoscopy today. It showed I have gastritis and oesophagitis (LA grade 2 my notes say) They did a biopsy because my oesophagus started bleeding and now I am freaking out a bit. My Mum passed away from oesophageal cancer in January and it hadn't even entered my mind there was anything wrong with mine, one doc had queried an ulcer but most of my problems seem to be bowel related so we needed to do this before a colonoscopy could be done. The doctor's have also treated for diverticulitis 6 weeks ago with antibiotics and fluid diet and had a negative blood test for celiac. I am getting pains daily still and there is a lump I can see near my ribs but nothing showed on an upper abdo ultrasound. I can't talk to anyone in my family about this because of my Mum. How long will the biopsy take at the moment?

  • Hi Onethingafteranother,

I'm sorry to read about what you're going through at the moment - I'm sure this is unsettling and worrying. Try to keep your mind off things and keep yourself busy as much as possible until you get your results. The time to get results varies, but usually it is within two weeks. I hope it's not too much longer to wait for you.

It's usually helpful to talk to others if you have worries, but if you feel you can't talk to your family, this forum is a safe space for you to talk through any thoughts or concerns.

    Wishing you all the best,

    Ben
