Smear test u25

I’ve been having symptoms associated with cervical cancer for the best part of a year now and still haven’t had any answers. I’ve had an initial look/swab by a doctor and an internal scan done but it’s taken months to get these done. When I went for the scan the doctor told me several times that I must push to get a smear test done, but that she wasn’t able to actually refer me. How do I get a referral- do I need another doctors appointment purely so they’ll put a referral in for me, or will they try an refuse as I’m under 25- I’ll be 25 in 6 months for reference.

  • Hi peachy,

If you are having worrying sypmtoms, you should be examined by a doctor and, if they think it's needed, they can refer you for a colposcopy. I'm not sure why your gp would tell you to get a smear when you've already had investigations and wasn't referred for a colposcopy.

A smear isn't a test for cancer or anything other than pre-cancerous cell changes, which does not present symptoms. I would contact your gp and get clarification.

I presume your examination and scan didn't show any concerns, so that should be reassuring.
